My partner, Bob, is as bad as I re takin in strays.

He just got a nice, no dash number, 6" Model 57.
It had been in the presentation box overly long and corrosion gave it a bad case of the uglies on the outside only.

Looks like it is going to become a bead blasted, flat blued 3 1/4 incher. Barrel length selected to get short but maintain full ejector stroke and maintain shape of ejector housing. That way it won't look full lugged.

Nuther neat concealed carry N frame.:)

Sam....bang is good. BANG is more gooder.

Sounds like the one I bought off of lendringser.

It started life as a shiny blue 6" square-butt M57 and wound up as a matte blue 4" quad-magnaported bobbed-hammer round-butt M57.

Big dirty fun. :)

I've got a 3" bl 657. Yum.

Shouldn't it become a 3.3" barrel? It just sounds right. ;)

Ported big-boomers are a hoot. I made the mistake of trying out one of those Schuemann ported hybrid Officer's ACP carry guns INSIDE a car from the driver's seat once. Once. What? What? I can't hear you, and everything's purple from the flash! Hey, where did my eyebrows go? :D

Man, I'd like to find one in that condition. Drop on a teflon finish and I'd be good to go - I like the longer bbl (already owning a Blackhawk .41 in 4 5/8").

I had the Mod 57 in 4" nickel. It got traded during one of my caliber downsizings. Heck, I already had a 44 and a 10mm auto. Nice gun.

My ammo supply still looks like a gun store stockroom.

I wouldn't mind having a little boomer like that. But I can't cut down the M57 that I already have, it's a 30 year old, blue, 6 inch, with German proof marks. I'm told the German proof marked S&Ws are somewhat rare, at least in the U.S. Damn good shooting gun, I bought it from the U.S. Army Rod & Gun Club in Crailshiem Germany in 1972. At that time it was near impossible to get an M29 due to the demand caused by the Drity Harry films and the M57 was second choice. It still shoots good and now I wouldn't trade it for a M29 'cept maybe one documented as having belonged to Elmer Keith!
C R Sam, Yeah, lets see some before and after pics. Sounds like a neat package.

Great project!

Love my .41s. One rests in a belt holster just behind my right hip as I scribble this.

Enjoy that one.

I have a blue M57 no dash 4 ". I used it in a night shooting competition. Unfortuantely, I brought the wrong ammo. It was full power Rem 210 gr sp. There was a huge fireball and I lost night vision. It was entertaining!
With lighter loads its very effective.

Like Erich, I am the proud owner of a 4.625-inch Ruger Blackhawk in .41. Pleasure to meet you all!

BTW- found that Winchester Silvertip .41 will penetrate about 12" of dead, stiff deer (including shoulder) from 3" bl at close range.

I found that a 'correct' bullet and load from my 5.5" Redhawk will offer a visual explanation of "Sectional Density".

You know, if you ignore all common sense the 41 Magnum can be loaded right up there

Thanks for opening an old wound :(

I had a four inch 57 years ago and won quite a few IPSC matches with it. An old college buddy talked me out of it one day when I was strapped for cash.

Man, I wish I had it back.

I think I'll give him a call right now....

And do I recall Frank James writing that he'd been banned from "41-ing" due to steel plate / 210 PF?

I love that 3" 657 in the preceding post!!!

I think I'm going to have to find a way to get back into .41 mag again. Maybe a consignment buy somewhere here in California. I've owned two .41s and now I don't own either one.

Congratulations on a very cool blaster!!

I ran across a 4-5/8" .41 Blackhawk the other day for $319.00. I'm thinking real hard that it could be the basis of a real nice custom Sixgun. Then again, what wouldn't?;)

I like my 4 5/8" Blackhawk a ton for mountain hikes, Tim. Think he'd go $279? (I believe I got into mine for around $249 about 5 years ago, but I got the "family price" at the shop.) It's a handy gun.

:banghead: Darn M58, must have been dipping into my collection! You don't want to know how hard it is to put together a bunch of older DA .41Magnums in this state. They all have to be found in state. That being said, I just got two of the Accusport Ruger SS bisleys in .41Magnum. I've got a Blackhawk hunter in .41Magnum on order so that should take care of handgun purchases for three months. Guess it's time to get that Marlin FG. Let's see...........that brings my total of .41Magnums to .......46! I've just located a secret stash of Ruger Redhawk 5.5 inch, blued .41Magnums, too! My joss has changed. Anybody run into a Seville in .41Magnum recently? I don't have an Automag in .41JMP yet, either. If they're out there, I'll find them. LONG LIVE THE .41!:D

JOE MACK

:o I'll admit to having a .41 caliber Jones. I've also got a few .41 caliber wildcats and stuff such as a .41Avenger, .41Whammy, .405Winchester, a single action Ruger in .41AE, a .411Blaze(.411/.416Remington magnum), and a couple .414 Supermags to name a few. M58, you have some nice pieces in your collection, have you got a S&W magnum hunter in .41Magnum yet? That one keeps eluding me since I don't want to spend $1100 for the one on GA. There's also a rumor that Smith made a couple of the silhouette N-frames in .41Magnum but I've never seen one. Wish it were easier to latch onto some nice Smiths in .41Magnum without moving out of state at present. LONG LIVE THE .41MAGNUM!:D

Let's see...........that brings my total of .41Magnums to .......46!

This man has more .41 Magnums than I have handguns. That's just sick!

...and very cool! :D

Sam:

It appears you are as bad at advocating or doing outrageous things as I am. I have handled two S&W model 27/3 1/2-inch .357 Magnums that were converted to .41. Made a neat package, and in my view a better choice of cartridge with that big of a gun with that short of a barrel.

Also saw one model 58 that was shortened to about 3 1/4" and dovetailed for a new front sight. It was another neat package.

On your friend's model 57. When the barrel is shortened that much I prefer to dovetail the rib and mount a sight with a higher blade and no ramp. Doing so allows one too hold up the blade (which is now much lower anyway) for long shots without filling the rear sight notch with ramp. As he plans this project give that some consideration.

I have a nice 41 Stainless Seville w/ 4 5/8" barrel right next to my bed. Made it myself from a sample Lothar Walther barrel while working for my dad at United Sporting Arms in Tucson. We got a 10 1/2" barrel and mine as samples. I made the short one for me with the serial number JDH-1. Someday to hand down to my son.

Then there is the Black Sheep of your 41 mag crowd that cut down a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk to 4" for carry in the field. Here's my project.

The 41Mag is one of those cartridges that seems to have a certain mystique about it, I will have a gun in 41 mag someday, but not sure what. Just like the 6.5 swede and the 28 gauge, they seem like the redheaded step child of shooting sports, but they do the job with alacrity.
