March Mail in Match

March 8, 2003, 08:02 AM
March Mail in Match for Fellow THR Members

The age-old handgun debate -- 9mm vs. .45 ACP. Firepower vs. heft. John Moses Browning vs. some German fellow named Luger. Venerable steel vs. upstart plastic. Velocity vs. a piece of lead the size of a dinner plate. Pull out your favorite 20th Century military-based sidearm and head to the range.

For this month's match, shoot both 9mm and .45 ACP if you've got 'em. Two entries are allowed per class if you have a stock, improved and scoped version of both featured weapon (Open Class is still for those poor souls with neither).

Stock class includes a standard, out of the box 9mm or .45 ACP pistol with no trigger improvements, improved barrels, match bushings or significant gunsmith work. Improved includes any of the above and/or a production pistol from RRA, Les Baer, etc. with any guarantee of MOA.

10 shots standing, with no support, one or two-handed at 10 yards.

Shoot safely and good luck!

The March Target is available here (

We'll get February's scores up ASAP. I'll let ReadyontheRight 'splain why this is late :D

Sorry I was late with the Mail in Match stuff this month, but so was my wife 9 months ago (cue the drums - ba-dump-bump), we had a new baby last week :D and I'm just now catching up.

February's .22 plinker results will be posted this weekend. Lots of great shooting! Thanks again to Bedlamite for hosting the Mail in Match site and all the help!

Good luck and safe shooting!

March 8, 2003, 10:16 AM
Congrats on the baby, but that is why when you have been shooting at the range all day with your SO you are supposed to dance the night away. Dancing does not mean the Horizontal Tango!;)

March 8, 2003, 10:48 AM
Congrats on the baby! I have a 4 month old. If this is your first, there are some surprises ahead.

I'm think I'm gonna have to get in on this mail-in action...

March 8, 2003, 11:04 AM
Congrats on the baby!!!!!! I wondered where you'd been the last few weeks.
Enjoy them while their small. They grow fast. Then they want to shoot your guns.

I like it! I think I made this suggestion didn't I? Wow, now I am excited. Good thing it wasn't .40 S&W. I still don't have any plinking ammo loaded!!! I am so broke I haven't been able to buy 1000 bullets for $40! I think I have enough 9mm around and I know I have enough .45 ACP. Good match this month. Can't wait for the Feb results.

March 8, 2003, 11:51 AM
Congrats on the baby. I have a seven month old son and I completely understand where you are coming from. One word of advice take a lot of pictures or videos, they will be changing on a daliy basis.

Is it a boy or girls?

March 8, 2003, 12:20 PM
Congrats on the new addition to the family ... hope everyone is doing well.
Looking forward to the March match .... warming up the CZs

March 8, 2003, 04:45 PM
Mine just turned 16 and I still concider him a blessing.

Guess I'll sit out this month, I don't have a 9 or a 45.:( Not sure how that happened.

March 8, 2003, 10:55 PM
There's still an "Open" class for any handgun. Go for it. Time to dust off the G21 that I haven't shot since I discovered revolvers.

Oh and bedlamite, could you also post this in the Competition section. The moderators have agreed to make a stick of the link to the match page that you point us too. That way I won't have to keep searching up monthly posting.

March 8, 2003, 11:19 PM
Pull out your favorite 20th Century military-based sidearm and head to the range.

Gotta 9mm and .45 neither is millitary though (4506 and 639) can I still play:uhoh:

March 8, 2003, 11:42 PM
Does installation of night sights count as moving into the improved class?

Does installation of a short trigger (for Sigs) count as moving into the improved class?

Does installation of Hogue or aftermarket wood grips count as moving into the improved class?

I'm very unclear on what constitutes 'improved' class.

March 8, 2003, 11:44 PM
I was looking for another excuse to go to the range (that she hadn't heard in the last week)!:D

I'll even ride my mountain bike to the range for this one. It'll be my desert bi(ke)athalon.:D

March 9, 2003, 09:50 AM
Thanks for all the kind words THR members. Our little girl is doing great. I can't wait until she joins her brother and sister with me "hunting" (with Daisy Red Riders) one of these Fall days.:)

I am still learning about guns, and I cannot possibly list every possible improvement for every model, so I am leaving "improved" vs. "stock" up to you shooters. Grips and night sights don't seem like accuracy improvements to me.

If you've dumped a lot of time or money into an improved barrel, trigger work, fitted bushing or other accuracy improvements, count it as improved.

You can definitely still play -- I meant sidearms based on the two most prolific Western military cartridges of the 20th Century.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. Mine turned 19 last birthday, and I love her and am prouder of her even more than ever.

I think we ought to decide on aftermarket trigger modifcations being either improved or not. I could care less myself because I am still in the stock class and I really don't care if I win or not, I just view this as a good reason for me to get out and shoot. However, I can see this being a point of contention on this one. What do you guys think? Are aftermarket trigger mods reason to bump up to improved class?

March 9, 2003, 11:55 AM

March 9, 2003, 10:06 PM
Print 2 targets... on a 45 vs 9mm shoot.

Shouldn't you be able to distinguish 45ACP hits vs 9mm hits on the same piece of paper?

March 9, 2003, 11:18 PM
Shouldn't you be able to distinguish 45ACP hits vs 9mm hits on the same piece of paper?

I like saving trees as much as the next guy, but one piece of paper for each ten shots will be a heck of a lot easier to score.

March 10, 2003, 09:21 AM
We've gotten a lot more people posting than submitting targets. Lets see if we can change that this month.

As usual, My answer to the 9vs45 question is 10mm :neener:

Maybe one of the mods could move the MIM posts over to the Competitions forum?

March 10, 2003, 09:50 AM
Well, I didn't shoot the Pepsi can last month, as I was basking in the open class win from Jan. And my kid has my .22 rifle in Indiana. I don't know why he didn't shoot. In any case, I printed out the target on the back of a standard pistol target, and it worked really well. I just taped it to the center of a sheet of ink-jet paper and fed it through my printer. Beautiful! If you have some old targets you might give it a try.

El Rojo
March 10, 2003, 11:24 PM
More people need to enter!!! The only reason I won the Scoped class last month is because I was the only one that entered. There is something wrong with that. :banghead:

March 11, 2003, 08:32 AM
Maybe a better trigger would have helped me score a little better. OTOH maybe not.
I hope you don't mind, I'm planning on sending the pop-can target to my nephews all around the country for a family mail in match. I'm thinking BB guns at 10 yards. That ought to keep the X count high.

Bedlamite, do you want past MIM threads to me moved here? Seems like its the right spot but they're old and I wasn't really on top of that in the past. Can move them here and lock them. Sounds good to me.

March 11, 2003, 03:48 PM
I entered in the January MiM with the 38/357 wheelgun. Had to scramble to get the paper target mailed.

I shot the Febuary MiM with a Ruger 10/22. Didn't quite make the scramble to get the paper target mailed.

I think I need a scanner or a digital camera. Having to go to the post office, stuffing the target into an envelop, putting a stamp on and licking the envelop closed takes away from THR surfing. :D

March 12, 2003, 01:40 AM
Steve -- Thanks for posting this on the top of the Competitions board! I was 11.43x23 over on TFL and you've given me great rifle and shooting match advice both here and there. Maybe you could help us with ideas for some high power matches.

With this as a "sticky", I don't have to go in and make innane comments just to get each month's match info back to the top. My innane comments will now be completely for my own amusement.:D

How do you count shots that hit the paper but are outside the 7-ring?

Not that any of us would have such a thing... ;)

- pdmoderator

March 19, 2003, 08:41 AM
I only got the bhp out of the box, no .45,

i'm imagining its ok to shoot just the 9 and send in the one target?

how bout if i shoot you one with my snubbie .32 just for ha ha's?

continued later...

ok, i'm not following, i can shoot one target with my 9mm outa the box for stock and also one target with my .32 snubbie OR my scoped .22 (if i actually want a decent score) for open and hence 2 targets?

much,,,much later...

whew,,,active around here... :what:

March 21, 2003, 10:20 PM
The open class is supposed to be for those poor souls w/o access to the featured weapon, so just send in the 9mm target.

Better yet, see if a friend will let you test drive a .45.

March 21, 2003, 10:26 PM
How do you count shots that hit the paper but are outside the 7-ring?

Those that are completely outside would be counted just like a gutter ball (zero).

If you do break the ring, even slightly, it counts as the higher ring into which you broke.

March 24, 2003, 12:34 PM
Emailed my targets today. Boy those 185gr LSWC's sure do a number on the paper. Makes it hard to score. The nines where much easier to score. I look forward to the results.

The months end draws near. Let's go shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!

March 27, 2003, 01:46 PM
Y'all can stand down now. I just mailed off the winning target for 9mm stock division. I had forgotten just how well the Beretta "D" shoots. Thanks for helping me remember. I could have done the .45 as well if I had slowed down a little and verified point of impact before I started shooting for score. Oh well.

March 28, 2003, 01:32 AM

March 28, 2003, 04:30 PM

I am printing out the targets right now and getting ready to head out the door. I planned on loading some 9mm, but I didn't have a conversion kit for the RL 550B. Borrowed one from a friend. Looked at the die set a guy gave me, it doesn't have the decapper in the sizing die! So screw it, I found enough for me and Shakespear to go out and go shooting. Someday I will reload 9mm. I took an old TFLer and his wife out with me for this match. My wife was unavailable today. Anyway, Shakespeare, his wife Drama Freak, and I shot my Colt 1911 .45 ACP stock and my Taurus PT92C 9mm stock. I must say that Shakespeare is a horrible shot. He does the old "anticipate the shot jerk" so bad that his first 6 or 7 shots with the 1911 pegged the target stand! It is a good thing he fixed it from last time he center punched the target stand and that he is going to fix it this time or I might have been upset! Drama Freak on the other hand did excellent with the 9mm. She ended up shooting much better than me with it for score, I got 2nd, and Shakespeare finished a distant 3rd. I barely edged out Drama Freak with the 1911 and once again Shakespeare finished a dead last. I find that for myself I have to really work on patience with the handguns. I can shoot a rifle all day long, but with a handgun I just want to do quick double taps.

Overall it was a fun day. Here is an old shooting picture of us. I am kneeling in the front. Shakespeare is standing on the left, that is my wife to the right of Shakespeare, and in the middle with the redish hair is Drama Freak. The other two were part of our church group when we went on our church group shooting outing a couple years ago.

And is Shakespeare upset that his wife out shot him? Maybe deep down inside. The only consolence I got out of her beating me is that I did better than her with the rifles.

March 30, 2003, 01:51 AM
Can't you just stick them both for the time being?

March 30, 2003, 01:54 AM
It may also be time to post a reminder in the General discussion forum to get those targets in and let everyone know where to look for the scores. It took me a while to find this thread when it was moved.

April 2, 2003, 11:12 PM
For 280plus,

FYI, the targets on the walls of my office are qualification targets. The B-27 is my target from the academy. It was a much better and challenging course. The first 18 rounds are fired from the 25 yd line 12 right handed and 6 left handed. The rest are fired from decreased distances with the last 10 fired from the 5 yd line 5 from each hand.

The other is my most recent qualification. We've changed to the FBI Q-course. It is much easier. There are only 5 rounds fire from the 25 yd line. At the 10 yd line there are 20 rounds fired in 4 round strings from holster. I have to resist the urge to shoot the hole thing rapid fire. I can't resist making my 100's into smiley faces.

April 3, 2003, 04:06 PM

Sorry guys. I did not make it to the post office before it closed on Fri. Scores WILL be posted Monday evening.

Man, I am depressed. I am not a good shot with them hand guns. I just can't take my sweet time with them. I want to double tap and move on. I am going to make up for it this month! I know I can shoot a rifle.

I ain't on the bottom! Even with the Glock!

(BTW - the 45ACP holes are bigger!)I think that's what everyone's counting on, innit? ;)

(But the 9mms had more Xes!)

Thanks, bedlamite and ROTR!

My hats off to ya Charleym3 and Outlander. Fine shoot'n out there. This really is the most fun (shooting) I've had in a while. I'll have to take my time and really do a good group this month. The competition is getting heavy. Thanks again ROTR for coming up with this match.

It would really be cool if we could manage to have at least one months match as an area get together sort of thing. I'd be willing to travel a bit to shoot with some of yall some weekend.

Also I've got a few ideas for future months matches.
1. a left handed (weak hand) pistol match.
2. combat shotgun match. Best buckshot group at 25 yds or at least most pellets on paper after 5 shots or something.
3. Shotgun match with slugs.
4. Carbine shoot for those short rifles.
5. some kind of trick shot match. (idea still evolving, maybe splitting a shot on an axe head or something)

Just a few late night thoughts from the deputy. Anyway this is what I get like when I'm worn out from work. Brain won't shut off yet.

9mm Average: 71.077-1.308X w/ 13 entries
45ACP Average: 71.357-1.214X w/ 14 entries
Wow that was close. Almost split right down the middle too. I can see that age old argument will never get settled :)

Man, some of you guys are really awsome shots too!

Lots of good shooting. The thing is...that little 8.5"x11" piece of paper at 10 yards is pretty small too. Even the lowest scores (like mine) would stop the bad guys.

These are for fun, so go out and recruit new shooters.

Kudos to El Rojo for getting some new shooters out to the range! He has the record so far of getting TWO new shooters to participate in the match.

Man, I suck! :p

I should've taken more time to study where my bullets hit at that range, instead of just pushing the target out and firing at will! Hehe

Next month, my Mauser and I will do much better!

Everytime I get down on myself because I didn't shoot my best, I take that 8x11 target and hold it up to my chest. That kind of puts things in perspective.

Thanks ROTR for looking at the positive and trying to encourage me in my time of need! I wouldn't call them new shooters, but it was cool that Shakespeare's wife wanted to go. She ended up cleaning up with the 9mm. Lets keep this thing going.

On ideas, I shot a really cool shotgun match once. I don't think we could use it since everyone would have to make some heavy steel targets, but it was cool none the less. Your first shot was at 7.5 yards. A hostage half silhouette plate was 5 inches offset from a bad guy plate behind it. You had to shoot the bad guy without knocking over the hostage plate with buck-shot (look at the attached picture and you can see the standing hostage with the dead bad-guy lying behind him). Then you had to hit another half-man at 15 yards, then 25 yards. Then you had to do a tactical reload to slugs and then hit another half-man at 60 yards and 85 yards. The person with the lowest time won. You were penalized 30 seconds for hitting the bad guy and hostage, 60 seconds for just hitting the hostage (there was no way to really do that because when the half-man hostage fell over, it fell onto the bad-guy), and then like 5 seconds for each extra shell over 5. A few guys hit both the hostage and bad-guy and that would generate yells from the shooters in back of "He was a coo borater!" I missed the slugs twice my first time. Then the 2nd time I went down to a knee and hit them both no problem. I ended up getting 2nd place with a score of like 13 seconds! It was a fun match and I had a good time. Simple to set up and run. The best thing about it is I learned I can take head shots with my 870 and buckshot within 7.5 yards. Never would have tried that prior to that. I better practice some more before I decide to try it in real life.

i guess i messed up the address somehow, havent checked to see what i did. so here it is anyways.

i only shot the 9mm bhp out of the box, carrols lead reloads, right hand only slow fire.

i scored it 90 with 3X (counted the double as 2X). uh, i also touched the black with 2 but not the white 9 line so i counted all outside the black as 8's.

wish it made it in.

mighta given 9mm the edge it needed...:D

sorry no .45

no mauser or the like either so hopefully next month i'll have something that fits the may category. don't really feel like spending $ on any guns right now.

Good shootin 280. Sorry it didn't make it in.

280Plus -- You can use any kind of rifle in the "Open" category, so get out there and shoot in the April match!

April 9, 2003, 12:58 PM
I'm here all week! I'd like to thank the academy and my parents and my producer and Ummm, wait, wrong speech, fumble fumble, oh yeah, here it is.

I'd like to thank Beretta USA for making an accurate firearm with a consistant DAO trigger, Dillon Precision for their reloading equipment, Montana Gold bullets, V V for the powder, Winchester for the primers, the US Govt for the once fired brass, and mostly my wife. She insisted that I stay home, so instead of burning ammo at the range, I was dry firing in front of the TV practicing trigger control on her favorite TV shows characters.

280Plus -- The Bushy is not only OK, it probably fits into the "Improved" category, which includes current military weapons and clones.

Good shooting!
