In the latest issue of Shotgun News, right on the front page is a Romanian pump action AK. "California Legal" the ad proclaims.
And it has an evil pistol grip!

All of those "assualt rifle" laws I know of have the primary defininition of such as "a semi-automatic rifle". If it isn't semi-auto, it isn't an "assault rifle." I should also be easy to permanently modify the SKS and AK to be straight pull bolt rifles with a return spring, just by disabling the gas system and welding on a longer bolt handle.

Modifying the AR-15 in that way would be a bit more difficult.

Another modification to comply with the law would be to (semi) permanently attach the magazine, so it is not detachable without tools. That negates the second part of the "assault rifle" definition, a "detachable magazine". That has been done.

A third way, which would require receiver redesign, would be to modify the AR-15 to have a fixed magazine, but a stripper clip guide on the side (a la Johnson) to load it with 10 round clips. Again, no detachable magazine, no "assault rifle".

Jim, didn't DPMS have a slide-action AR about 10 years ago?

I remember the slide-action Galils from Suid Afrika. Thought those would catch on. Oh, well, can't be right all the time.:(

I'm the dumb one I guess; I always thought "assault" belonged in the "verb" catagory, like run, jump, drink... I didn't know it was an adjective... :scrutiny:

Look in the rifle section.

Hi, Tejon,

FWIW, the name sent me to the diccionario.

Yes, I think they did have a pump AR-15. I never saw one, but recall their ads.

The solution I like would be the side loader with 10 round stripper clips. Would actually be about as fast as replacing magazines, and should drive the anti's up the wall.

Disgusting that mfgs should even make these guns because of our laws.

Geez...that's just wrong...pump action AKs. If someone could just make an accurate semi-auto .223 w/o pistol grip (Kali law) that could take AR mags, they'd be raking it in hand over fist....HAND OVER FIST i said!!

Now....if it shot .177 caliber pellets.....that would be kind of neat.

They wouldn't have built them.

Same premise as the DPMS pump-action AR-15's.

They'll sell, until ********** makes another more restrictive law saying they're illegal, too. :(

Sorry - the pump-action AK is an absolute loser, as far as I'm concerned.

I handled one at Century International Arms' booth at last year's SHOT Show, and unlike ANY other pump-action firearm out there, the pump-AK makes you work against the resistance of the recoil spring that they left in the gun so that they didn't have to figure out a different method of retaining the receiver cover.

If it came down to it, I'd rather have a bolt-action Mauser, Mosin-Nagant, or a .30-30 levergun than a pump-AK that fights me with every shot.

As a **********n, the very existance of the PAR-1 monstrosity is infuriating to me. Worst thing is, last time I saw them at the local Turner's, they were selling like hotcakes. :banghead:

Wouldn't an SKS be better? Those are still legal, last I checked.

I should also be easy to permanently modify the SKS and AK to be straight pull bolt rifles with a return spring, just by disabling the gas system and welding on a longer bolt handle

That to me makes the most sense. Perhaps even cut an opening on the left hand side of the reciecer and weld a bolt handle on that side as well. That way you charge the weapon like a FAL.

You could do some reasonably fast shooting with a system like that.

Good Shooting
