Hello,

A friend of the family lives in West Virginia. She was cleaning out her elderly aunt's house, they are sending the aunt to an assisted living home, and found a P38 Lugar, in near mint condition. It is a WWII take home piece from her uncle. She contacted me for some help in disposing of the firearm. Okay, this is for real, I'm not making it up, our friend is a widow also and knows nothing about guns. From what I could get out of her is that all the serial numbers match. She even has a matching serial number on the magazine. There are Swastikas on the pistol in the right location. She took it to the local PD to "get rid of it". The cop actually handed it back to her and said it is worth money and she should try to sell it. Gotta love those small towns. Well, she took it to a big city gunshop and was offered $100 for it. Thankfully she knew better. Can anyone give me a ball park worth on this pistol? From the email pix that I have, it looks to be in NRA grade good or better. It does work, she worked the action and I heard it click over the phone.

Thanks.

Hi, Dogsoldier,

Both the P.38 and the Luger were German pistols but they are different guns. As a general rule, the Luger is worth more than the P.38. If you could describe the guns in terms of actual markings and type, as well as condition and amount of original finish, we can help. Both guns had the year of manufacture on them (coded as a letter on some Lugers) and that is important to value. Both guns are much sought after by collectors and either is definitely worth a lot more than $100.

Where the hell did I get Luger from? :banghead:

It is a P38. Sometimes the brain doesn't work too well. I have emailed Irene asking her to send me the markings. Thanks.

Hello,

The P38 has a serial number of 127XX and P.38 SVW45. The picture my friend email is not all that great so I had to look hard, but it seems this pistol has highly figured wood grips. I thought that all those WWII era pistols had bakolite grips. Like I said, I'm out of my realm on this one. The gun looks does look like the blue is in ggod shape, don't know if it is original. And it does have Naazi ordinace markings in the right place. She will be sending me the pistol to help sell for her. SO, time will tell what this thing is.

Thanks.
