I'm showing my age, but the last time I handled an M24 sniper rifle was back in 1992 and they were issued with Leupold optics. Last night I caught a show on the satelite entitled "Sniper School". It was all about Class #04-02 US Army Sniper School at Fort Benning. The scope being used on these rifles was absolutely NOT the old Leupold ones that were origionally issued with the Sniper Weapon System. It was some high-speed, space-age looking thing that was a fair bit larger than the Leupold but smaller than an AN/PVS-4. It appeared to be rectangular in shape.

Anyone have info, nomenclature, etc on the current optic used with the M24 SWS?

Thanks,

Hmm...wish you had a picture. I believe they are still using the same Leupold Mk4 M3 scopes.

Did it look like this maybe? Dunno why one would be on a M24 though...

I was thinking it was some sort of day scope/night vision combo.
When doing the night firing they were using the same scope they did during the day shoots.

just a guess for now. I will look into it more soon.

AFAIK, the U.S. Army is still issuing the Leupold Mark 4 M3A scope. The only scope I can think of that matches your description of having a rectangular shape is the laser rangefinding scope that I think was made by Swarovski a few years ago.I f I remember correctly, it was a fair bit of coin for that scope. HTH.

This might have been the one you saw, http://www.usoptics.com/M40riflescope.htm or it could've been one of their other scopes.

Gomez ,

I think what you may have seen is the AN/PVS-10, NIGHT VISION SNIPERSCOPE. Here is a pic.

IDHUNT,

Close, but no cigar. The scope that they were using had the same sort of offset between front and rear objectives, but the whole unit was more rectangular and the rear objective did not project as far from the body as the PVS-10.

By the way, the show was on the Discovery Channel.

Gomez, why not post in Jeff White's thread on sniper training. Come to firearms confessional. :)

ID Hunt had it right, I caught the end of it today. It was the PVS-10, maybe it was just the camera angle that threw you off.
