I bought my mother a digital camera for mother's day and I took some pictures of some of my guns and deer mounts and I wanted to post some pics but the file sizes are too large. How can I shrink them down to postable sizes. I took the picture quality from best to good so the files are slightly smaller but I can shrink them down anymore. The closest I have come to a postable size is 160kb. Can someone help me out here?

As far as free tools, the easiest to use is probably Irfanview (do a google search). Open the file with that, resize it, and save to disk.

Generally, a jpg in 800x600 or smaller should fit fine here. a width of 400 pixels or less might be more appropriate.

Bite the bullet and pick up a copy of Photoshop Elements; there's a tool that optimizes pictures for the web. Minimum file size with maximum image quality.
