Separate Forums - Revolver & Autos

Oleg,

Let me start by saying THANK YOU as an alumnus of TFL. I look forward to coming to your new site, continuing my firearm and civil liberty education, and hope to post as often as I can.

Do you think it would be possible to split up the HANDGUNS forum into 2 separate categories? I swear my left brain is a "revo" fan and my right is in "auto" mode most of the time. Perhaps that's why I get such a pleasure from going to both forum types and it makes each forum more unified, IMHO.

Just a suggestion - Long live THR!

Oleg ...

I was wondering the same thing. Would probably make searching a little easier too in the long run. Thanks

I think that is considered as a possible future change.

As we are right now, there is not that much action and it is easier to run as a consolidated forum.

I liked:

General Handgun Forum
Revolver Forum
Semi-automatic Forum

as on TFL, but I guess that was a bit of a pain to moderate.

Let me add my support to this suggestion. I'm not sure we need a separate handgun forum but having auto and revolver discussion separate was a nice aspect of TFL. I'm not complaining though! I love the new site>

If you do split them, then where do revolver vs. semi-auto flame threads go, though?

Well, FWIW, I'll weigh in on the "don't do it" side.

Having two forums means you really have to have three forums, for those "in between" topics. I suscribe to a Less Is More philosophy. Look at Glock Talk. I'd bet there was more moving of threads between the handgun forums on TFL than on all the other forums combined.

Also, with all handgun threads on the same page, there will be more "crossover learning" between the "just autos" people and the "just wheels" people.

I suspect I'm in the minority, though. :p

EDIT: Oh yeah, we don't do seperate forums for bolt rifles and autos, nor for pump, auto, or break-open shotguns, etc... there's less traffic there, I know, but the principle is the same. I think. :D

Here's my 2 cents...Just have Revolvers and Semi-autos. For one thing there shouldn't be a need for a "wheel-gun vs. semi flame" site because there is no "better" between the two...it's what YOU the user prefer.

I guess I'm in the minority with boing on this one. The only thing I see this accomplished on TFL was letting the Moderators practice moving threads. It seemed like a good 25% of the threads in each forum were moved for being in the wrong place.

Dacos
December 25, 2002, 10:55 AM
GeneS - I disagree. I don't remember there being anywhere close to 25% of threads being moved between the two and I logged into TFL every day for several years.

I also don't think that a third forum is absolutely necessary just b/c you have two forums on pistols and revolvers. Just allow someone to double post if they want.

I think separate forums would probably cut down on the number of searches overall.

Shoot well, Dacos

I would have to agree with the majority here. 2 separate forums would be OK by me. Most of the topics that were in the 3rd general type forum on TFL could have been put into the auto and revo forums. There were very few posts that I saw that fell under a general pistol category.

I vote for the split.

I think boing has it right - if you split it in two, you'll actually need three. Because there are general carry issues, practice issues, ammunition issues, etc., that aren't specific to either revolvers or semi-auto's (or semi-auto revolvers - where does that mateba fit in? ;))

The determining issue for the administrators will probably be traffic. If handgunning gets to be too overcrowded, necessity might dictate a split.

Then we can debate splitting the rifle into bolt/pump/single shot/semi auto :D

Consider me another vote for splitting into separate revolver/auto handgun categories. The Strategies and Tactics area should be able to handle the non-specific topics, such as ammo and carry issues, that are germaine to both types of firearms.

I am really looking forward to this new site, but where are the major sponsers? I got some Christmas tip money that's burning a hole in my pocket right now.

For those of us interested in spending time more efficiently, how does everyone feel about two handgun forums? One would be for revolvers, and the other for semi-auto.

Thanks.....

Valid question, emc. We will most likely re-examine the forum lineup a little later. But for now, we would like to get our feet on the ground and try to get our arms around what we have at this point.

I agree as well. I would like to see one forum address revolvers and the other semi auto pistols. I don't think a general handgun forum is needed. Just my opinion.

All in one forum will soon get pretty unwieldy.
Splittin into Revos n Autos puts a few guns into limbo.

Maby three way....?
General handguns
Revolvers
Autoloaders

A lot of stuff that would go in general could fit in both revolvers and autos. Or neither.

Just mutterin out loud.

Thanks, incidentally, for putting this site online. Looks great and lots of the folks from TFL here!!

Note: The two handgun forum(s) request threads have been merged. Since Dacos' thread was the first it gets top billing by default.

As I implied above, we are giving this serious consideration. If it doesn't happen soon, or even if it doesn't happen at all, please be patient.

As for moving threads on TFL, Dacos is right, we didn't move anywhere near 25%; was there did that (WTDT?). I would guesstimate it was around 5%. If you eliminate the threads that needed to be moved that were originated by about 2 specific members, the percentage is far lower. It seemed some never figured out that there was three forums and always assumed the mods would move their threads to where they belonged.

The only reason I mentioned the above is to ask everyone, if we do add the additional forums to please put your thread in the proper forum the first time.

Also, there is no need to fill this thread with a lot more "me too" posts. We already know what the overwhelming opinion is.

Splitting the forum into at least a revo and semi section is much easier to keep up with. A third, General HG, section as TFL did wouldn't be too bad of an idea, either.:)

I would say that if two seperate forums does become a reality, that threads not be moved...it just clutters up both forums, because the thread pretty much stays in both.
Even though it might be irritating to see threads started in the wrong forum, it's even more aggravating to see a bunch of "moved" threads as well.

I also would like to volunteer my services as a moderator for a wheelguns forum...I am currently the mod for "the Wheelhouse" at glocktalk.com.

Thanks to Mike Irwin, C.R. Sam, and Oleg for passing the word:
My two cents: I favor a breakdown similar to the TFL ie General Handgun, Revolver, Semiauto in addition to all of the others I see listed. Most of the time I'm in the Revolver section but I do have interest in all firearms and related issues. My new monicker will be 44Caliber because that is what I shoot every week and my previous handle was too long.
Look forward to reading the many posts

Guys, please understand what THR is. This isn't an attempt at creating a TFL clone. This is a new forum. While we shall hold to the TFL ideals (hence the name) we are doing some things a bit differently.
Give us time to grow some roots before we start cutting things up. Too many catagories can make things unwieldly. Just look at the DefenseReview forums. I like where they are going... but they should have started out a little closer together and then spread it out as it grew.

Mike Irwin
December 27, 2002, 02:07 AM
Good and valid points, George, but why re-create what TFL used to be?

Second, if the emphasis is on keeping things simple (which I applaud), why have separate forums for rifles and shotguns? They're both long guns.

Not trying to poke, just trying to understand why the treatment would be different between the shoulder arms and the hand guns.

It's readily apparent that quite a few didn't read my post above.

Again, we are seriously considering this issue and it either will or won't happen. It's that simple. There is no need for a lot of "me too" posts. So I'll close this thread and we will all wait for a decision one way or the other.
