Current status: No cosponsors. Nothing on House Judiciary Committee schedule. Needs scheduled vote and 20 votes to leave Committee.

14 House Judiciary Committee members who sponsored this same legislation in 2005. 3 more Committee members who have advocated for AWBs in the past (Davis, Wasserman-Schulz, Lungren).

In 2005, this same bill went a month before acquiring any co-sponsors. The current bill was introduced February 13, 2007.

No change in status as of March 1, 2007.

12 Cosponsors signed on to Rep. McCarthy's bill on March 7:

Rep Ackerman, Gary L. [NY-5] - 3/7/2007
Rep Crowley, Joseph [NY-7] - 3/7/2007
Rep Fattah, Chaka [PA-2] - 3/7/2007
Rep Filner, Bob [CA-51] - 3/7/2007
Rep Frank, Barney [MA-4] - 3/7/2007
Rep Jackson-Lee, Sheila [TX-18] - 3/7/2007
Rep Maloney, Carolyn B. [NY-14] - 3/7/2007
Rep Meehan, Martin T. [MA-5] - 3/7/2007
Rep Moran, James P. [VA-8] - 3/7/2007
Rep Schakowsky, Janice D. [IL-9] - 3/7/2007
Rep Schiff, Adam B. [CA-29] - 3/7/2007
Rep Van Hollen, Chris [MD-8] - 3/7/2007

If these are your reps, you probably already know they are worthless but call them and give them an earful (if you belong to their district, otherwise you are wasting your breath).

Other than this, the bill is still going nowhere. It needs assignment to a Subcommittee before it can move anywhere and it has not been assigned one yet. This suggests that the Chairmain (John Conyers) may be keeping a lid on this bill for now...

Currently the House Judiciary Schedule (http://judiciary.house.gov/search.aspx) shows no plans to even discuss HR 1022, though this schedule is usually only updated a few days in advance so that can change rapidly.

Just click on the name and it will take you to a page with contact information for that representative. I suggest flooding their offices with faxes in addition to just making phone calls. If you don't want to pay for a long distance call or don't have a fax machine, you can use FAXZERO (http://faxzero.com/). Here is a link (http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/2007/02/awb2-sample-letters.html) that will take you to a page of a sample letters that you can alter and use.

H.R. 1022 was referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on March 19, 2007; but Thomas was just updated to show the referral. This is the first of many steps it must take to become a bill. However, almost all bills make it to this step and many bills never make it past this step.

Usually a bill is referred to the proper subcommittee almost immediately after introduction and in the past, that is what has happened with this bill. For whatever reason, they sat on it and did not refer it to the subcommittee this session until March 19th (almost a month of limbo).

All in all, things are looking good for this bill to die a quiet death in committee.

As you might have guessed, several Representatives felt a need to take a political stand after yesterday's tragedy. Three new co-sponsors signed on to McCarthy's bill yesterday:

Rep Waxman, Henry A. [CA-30] (http://www.henrywaxman.house.gov/contact.htm) - Democrat

This brings the total to 36 co-sponsors, 9 of whom are on the House Judiciary committee.

And another Presidential candidate jumps into the fray!

Joseph Biden (http://biden.senate.gov/) has just introduced S. 2237 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-2237) in the Senate. The bill would, among other things, reauthorize the Clinton AWB and close the "gun show loophole."

There's no text of the legislation yet, but Biden issued a press release (http://biden.senate.gov/newsroom/details.cfm?id=286107) about it.

Effectively dead. It's been in committee since 19 March and will die there. It is not scheduled for hearings or a vote. Since HR 2640 has passed chances are mighty slim that any other gun bills of any type will come out of any committee.

From: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-1022
This bill is in the first step in the legislative process. Introduced bills go first to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise them before they go to general debate. The majority of bills never make it out of committee.

ChestyP
February 11, 2008, 04:31 AM
It won't go to "actually dead" until the end of the 110th Congress at the end of this year. Have no fear, it'll start all over again NEXT year with the 111th Congress. And, statistically with a Democrat president in the White House. And BOTH of the leading Democrat candidates have said they support banning "assault weapons."
