Bandwidth Usage

I know this site probably uses a lot of bandwidth. With what I estimate, you're probably around 400GB a month. My friend says his company would charge $1800 a month for that kind of usage.

He recommended a company, www.rackshack.net that has good rates. He thinks they are crazy. For 400GB a month, they only charge $99. It might be something to check out. He says they are losing big money if someone uses that much, but their loss is his gain.

Just something to ponder.

Checking the logs, we've transferred 13.5 G outbound and 6.5 G inbound over the last 5 days. Bandwidth consumption should be higher than that, but we've got things set up so that the web server asks browsers if they support compression (most do), and if they answer "yes" then everything's compressed before going out. When we turned it on, the front page (including graphic) was about 40k transferred; compression dropped that to 7k.

Bandwidth costs are actually under control -- we're hosting it ourselves on a dedicated line so we don't have to worry about bandwidth usage -- just peak usage. We're at 27% utilization on average right now, so we ought to be good for a while.

Thanks on the recommendation for rackshack though -- we'll keep it in mind.

That compression is a good idea. Without it, you guys would be out of control.
