A request, for an email mission. Geraldo Rivera slanders gun owner

Hello folks,

We were all saddened recently by the murders at Virginia Tech, and we have all been concerned about what this incident could mean for our rights as well. I am a longtime AR15.com forum member, and for those who haven't seen, one of our own was recently defamed by the media after the shooting.

Our member, Wayne Chiang, is a Virginia Tech student, he's Oriental, and he's a firearms enthusiast. Apparently that's a bad combination. The night after the shootings, Wayne's website was featured on Geraldo Rivera's Fox News show, and he was thrown out for the world to have their way with him. Now, Wayne is a good guy, and has no connections to the shooter, but thanks to Geraldo and Fox News, he has now been connected. Wayne has received numerous death threats, and been implicated in this horrible tragedy.

This could be any one of us here. You visit "gun" websites, you own guns, and you probably enjoy shooting those guns. It's no great leap to see that it would take very little to make any one of us guilty in the court of public opinion. This internet and TV crucifixion of a fellow gun owner cannot be allowed. We must stand on this and make our point, or it could be any one of us next.

Wayne's personal webpage can be found athttp://wanusmaximus.livejournal.com/

Part of Geraldo's comment can be seen there as well.

All I ask is that you take the time to send an email to Fox News and their sponsors and let them know that we will not support having an innocent, gun owning, genuine "good kid" thrown to the wolves, solely because he likes guns. Let's show these people that we are gun owners and will not allow them to throw us under the bus for ratings.

Here is Wayne on CNN, in an attempt to clear his name from this slanderous attack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kqLcaoC2Qs

Here is a list of Fox sponsors that one of our member located on the net. http://www.debone.com/boycottFoxNewsSponsors.html

Like I said, all I ask is that you take a minute or two and let Fox and their sponsors know that gun owners can stand together, and will not be the social pariahs and scapegoats for the masses.

I'll post a form email in a little while, if you like, to make things quicker and easier for you guys. Thank you for your time and Jeff White, thank you for your effort.

If you enjoyed reading about "A request, for an email mission. Geraldo Rivera slanders gun owner" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

maybe the best way is to flood THIS inbox:

foxnewsonline@foxnews.com

this is their 'comment' email address.

my response:

I watch fox news regularly. Again, I am sickened by the irresponsible, alarmist, sensational 'journalism' of Geraldo Rivera. As I am sure you know, Geraldo did what amounted to a hit piece on an innocent man, Wayne Chiang in the wake of the shootings at Virginia Tech. With nothing even closely resembling evidence, Geraldo profiled an Asian man with guns, and plastered his identity on television for the world to see. And of course, this was not the man responsible for the carnage. One can only begin to imagine the nonsense this man has had to deal with. An acquaintence of Wayne's that posts on a popular firearms website informed those of us on another site that Wayne has received numerous death threats as well.

This is not the first time Geraldo has been criminally irresponsible on national television. He is more concerned with breaking a 'story' than with truth, and his actions reflect directly on FOX News as a whole. I will not be watching your news program while Geraldo is still a part of your organization.

Thank you,

I have sent letters to your sponsors because of Geraldo Rivera's false reporting and slandering of Wayne Chiang. Geraldo kept reporting Wayne as the possible shooter even after the police told fox that he was not a suspect. I am boycotting all of your sponsors until Geraldo Rivera is FIRED!

Yeah we should make a poll... i'm going to make sure to link to this thread on m1911.org, but i'm not a member of any other forums aside from this one and that one, so everyone else will have to hit the other ones.

Edit: This is a copy of what i posted over at m1911.org

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but as i'm sure many of you know that Geraldo on Monday night falsely accused a member of ar15.org of being the VTech shooter. Apparently being asian and a gun collector means that you can be accused of a horrific crime without an apology. I'm a member at thehighroad.org and we're trying to make sure that Geraldo doesen't get away with this. Heres a link to a thread with information about contacting fox news and its sponsors in regards to this incident. Here's email text anyone can feel free to cut/modify/paste, although the earlier email on this thread is shorter and perhaps better.

_______________________________

Your network just wreaked havoc upon an innocent human being. I’m referring to the false accusations levied against a Virginia Tech alumnus by Geraldo Rivera. While it has always been a stretch to call Geraldo a journalist, this latest incident warrants his immediate termination.

Geraldo vilified an INNOCENT HUMAN BEING on national TV. Rivera apparently took flight with the first openly gun-owning Asian male he could find that had an association with the college. This calls into question whether Fox has hired someone with racist leanings and a personal agenda of sensationalism, to say nothing of his obvious lack of ability to research and verify leads.

An innocent man's good name has been irreparably damaged, his reputation tarnished, and he is now receiving death threats and hate mail, thanks to the drivel that YOUR NETWORK allowed Geraldo to broadcast.

Until such a time as Rivera is removed from the air permanently, and a public apology is issued both by himself and the Fox News Channel, I will boycott not only your broadcasts, but your major advertisers as well. I will be issuing e-mails to those advertisers, informing them of my decision to boycott their products, the reasons why, and urging them to pull sponsorship from your network until such a time as apologies are made, and Rivera is dismissed.

I am also making a point to inform my friends, neighbors, co-workers and colleagues of this utter disgrace, and will ask them to not only express their own displeasure to you personally, but to also boycott both your broadcasts and sponsors.

Your network has disgracefully harmed an innocent man. I’m standing by to see if you react with appropriate measures.

Subject: Geraldo the Retardo

I thought Fox was supposed to be a "spin free", and "fair and ballanced" news network.(?) I will not watch Fox news, as long as that asshat with a moustache is still employed there. Furthermore, I really hope the young man slandard by Geraldo decides to sue him personally.

I went for the "gentle constructive" approach this time.
Mailed to Fox News:

Everybody makes mistakes. It is how we address those errors that define our character.

My personal suggestion is that Fox News air a special segment on Richard Jewell, the man falsely accused of perpetrating the Atlanta bombing in 1996.

The segment should be hosted by Geraldo Rivera.

Common points should be noted between the media’s treatment of Richard Jewell and Mr. Rivera’s and Fox’s treatment of Wayne Chiang. You have an excellent staff of writers who, I am sure, could do far better than I at pointing out the harm that can be caused when the media acts in an irresponsible manner.

Such a segment could be both educational and entertaining. It would certainly be better than some half-hearted apology, don’t you agree?

Best regards.

I was infuriated when I saw Geraldo Rivera and his flunkies drag the first Asian-American with a picture of a gun they could find through the mud . With no evidence at all your reporter plastered Wayne Chiang’s website all over the world identifying him as the murder. Racist slander pure and simple to fill dead air. We ultimately found out that Cho Seung-Hui was the murder, but only after Geraldo’s drive-by-shooting of a report was repeated over and over again. Then it continued to be reported! Irresponsible, alarmist, sensational "journalism" like this does not belong on “fair” Fox News. MSNBC has done a much better job of covering this tragedy and I will be watching them until Geraldo and his lynch mob are gone from Fox.

BTW, keep the profanity and RKBA jargon out of what you send. It only reduces the impact of the letters.

I found this site from one of the guys over at PerfectUnion.com.
Well here is what I sent over to Fox News:

My name is Matt Harp. I live in Louisville, KY. I just saw the piece Geraldo Rivera did on Wayne Chiang. It seems to me that Mr. Rivera tried and convicted that man without ever giving Mr. Chaing an opportunity to speak in his own behalf.
Judging from his drawing of a map that could have revealed the location of U.S. forces during Desert Storm in 1991, his comments on illegal aliens on The O'Rielly Factor show recently, and his slanderous implication of Mr. Chiang; I find Mr. Rivera to be a poor and Irresponsible journalist. Frankly, he does not deserve the title.
I can only assume that he is on your payroll in an effort to present balanced news reporting. I can appreciate this, but I believe he is damaging your credibility with his talk show host mentality. I believe you would be better served with a liberal minded journalist than a liberal minded entertainer. At least a journalist is more likely to check his facts before going on the air.

Derek Zeanah

OK, here's the idea behind the e-mail list: We want to be able to drop the hammer on advertisers, editors, and whoever else on short notice. Basically we want an avalanche of e-mails/letters/whatever.
Sometimes the net gets spread wider -- it's one thing to e-mail Geraldo's producer; it's another to e-mail all of his advertisers. Oftentimes the detailed list gets drawn up later, and if folks aren't paying attention they'll send the initial e-mail and that's it.
There are folks who care, but who don't follow this board much. We'd like to offer them a chance to team up as well.
The list should be low volume, so it doesn't need to be filtered, and every mail from it will be actionable. If we need to discuss things, we can do it here.We need to figure out the remainder, but for now I've created the list itself.

E-mail activism-subscribe@thehighroad.org to subscribe. It's not prettied up yet, but it's active.

Dear FOX

I am sickened by the irresponsible, alarmist, sensational, 'journalism' of Geraldo Rivera. Geraldo's slander on an innocent man, Wayne Chiang, was nothing short of sickening. One can only begin to imagine the nonsense this man has had to deal with. An acquaintance of Wayne's that posts on a popular firearms web site informed those of us on another site that Wayne has received numerous death threats as well.

I eagerly await to see how FOX intends to remedy the situation.

My post on a message board that I run and also included in emails to Fox...

I know the media wants to get the story out as quick as possible, not because they really care about informing the people but because it is good business. You get the story first and with the most sensationalism and your ratings go up.

But, at what cost? In this day in age of everyone being so quick to point fingers and place blame I just don't see why we can't manage to hold the media accountable for what they broadcast to the masses.

People look to the news media with a sense of trust, probably more than they should at times, and the media has a moral and ethical obligation to provide the best level or reporting they can. And that doesn't just mean the best catch lines, it means accurate.

I know some people saw the link that Katie posted in the Virginia Tech thread...it was to an Asian males Live Journal page and people were speculating on him being the shooter, which he wasn't. What I didn't realize until today was that Geraldo went on air to report this information. He went as far as to show pictures from the page, bang on doors near the guys last known address and more...all after being informed by law enforcement that the man in question was not a suspect.

I think it's sick that we would let the people that we trust to deliver us the news get away with something like this without even a peep. It disgusts me that this person, Wayne Chiang, has had his pictures splashed across the t.v. and internet and has now become tangled up in the whole tragedy that was the Virginia Tech Shooting. He had no involvement with the incident, but now must deal with the stigma, death threats and other things that come along with being labeled a suspect by shoddy reporting.

Here is what I sent:
Dear Fox News,

I am shocked and disappointed about Rivera's knee-jerk accusation regarding the VT shootings and a young man named Wayne Chiang. Wayne Chiang, like myself, is a gun owner. Apparently that -- and the fact that Wayne Chiang is from Asian descent -- was enough for Heraldo Rivera to convict him of the Virginia Tech shootings. Why else would he plaster his personal information all over the mainstream-media waves and send a news crew to hunt him down, even after the police announced that he was not the shooter? That is beyond bigotry, not only against race, but because Wayne is a gun owner. I hope I don't need to tell you that this offends me greatly.

Although I have been a longtime supporter and watcher/listener of Fox News, I WILL NOT watch or listen to any Fox News programming until Heraldo Rivera issues a public apology to Wayne Chiang and is dismissed from his employment with Fox News. Surely you realize that he tarnishes both the reputation and the image of fairness and balance that Fox News strives to defend. Sensationalist hacks like Rivera are not fit to work in journalism.

I will also be contacting Fox News' sponsors and notifying them that I will be boycotting their goods and services until Fox News severs their ties with Heraldo Rivera.

I very much hope that Fox News will take an appropriate action to this outrage, and I will be standing by.

Sent the following to Fox News:

I have been a faithful Fox News watcher for many years, especially during the elections. I can remember when many of my friends and I truly believed that Fox News was 'The Place' to actually see a story reported truthfully. I have noticed the same kind of sensationalism creeping into Fox News as I would expect to see on most of the MSM news outlets, but overall I would have still rated Fox a step ahead of the competition. No more. I watched Geraldo's blatant attempt at being judge and jury against the innocent Wayne Chiang. I find it truly sad that the American media believes they have the right to attack an innocent person in such a way. Many people, myself included, have never really considered Geraldo a journalist in the past. I wonder how many will consider him a criminal after this epsiode. I will no longer watch Fox News, and I will inform your advertisers of my reasons.

At the very least Geraldo should publicly apologize to the person he publicly slandered. Sterner action on the part of Fox News would not be a disappointment.

Respectfully

Wayne, I've posted on your facebook profile and I've said it numerous times. I think legal action is needed on your part. Lawsuits should be made for libel. After Geraldo publically slandered you on television, it snow balled as you became associated with the killer. Now the CTV episode is making the situation worse by showing your picture mixed in with the killer. This combined with the death threats must be infuriating. Make those broadcasting companies lose some serious cash!

Here's what I sent

Hi, my name is removed and I currently attend the University of Minnesota and will soon be graduating. As news of the tragedy unfolded at Virginia Tech, I was deeply saddened. No one knew what exactly was going on but it had been revealed that it was an Asian male was the shooter. No sooner had that information been released Geraldo Rivera on his show “Geraldo at Large” made a public announcement that he had found the shooter. Geraldo did a simple connect the dots, he was: Asian, about the same age, had pictures of himself with guns, and had lived in the same dorm rooms. Well, Geraldo was absolutely WRONG. As a result of his “reporting” Wayne Chiang received numerous death threats, became associated as a murderer, and as a result was slandered by Geraldo. As a student, Asian, and a gun owner, I can put myself in Wayne’s shoes. The simple associations made by Geraldo were nothing but racist.

Because of the negligent actions taken by Geraldo, I will be joining many others in boycotting all of your programs as well as any of your sponsors until Geraldo is removed from your network. Rest assured that similar e-mails will be sent to your sponsors.

Subject: Geraldo Riviera - Wayne Chiang Story
To: foxnewsonline@foxnews.com

I have been a viewer of Fox News for several years due to the fact that you try to report breaking news and heated issues from a realistic two sided view instead of from the radical left like all other networks seem to do. I am however, repulsed by Geraldo Riviera & Fox News for your total disregard of the truth in reporting the Wayne Chiang story. I am sick and tired of watching Geraldo jump to conclusions and create a story that doesn't exist, which in turn creates havoc in innocent people's lives. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

This was "the straw that broke the camel's back". I will no longer be a viewer of Fox News as long as this irresponsible person, who continues to report the inaccurate, is employed by you.

Thank you,

aren't there organizations that advocate for Asian people?
perhaps we can get them on board too, early on though
Geraldo did say that "if some one in that class had a gun it would have been a fairer fight"...he sais that to Bill the no spin guy....

yes I sent my email in, I kept it short.

I am not sure to whom this letter should be sent, but I need to register my disgust at your sloppy reporting. The news report that featured photos of Wayne Chiang along with Cho is pathetic. Do all Asians look alike? All gun owners?

By all accounts Cho was the perpetrator, was Korean, used two handguns. Why are you showing Wayne Chiang who is ethnic Chinese and is demonstrating rifles? How could you get it so wrong with so much information at hand? Incredible.

You most certainly owe Mr. Chiang an apology as well as your viewers. If Mr. Chiang decides to bring legal action for your slanderous journalism, I shall certainly be one of the first to contribute to his legal fund.

NOVA is represented well here. Mr. Chiang, add one more to the E-mail heap waiting to bury Geraldo.

All,

My name is XXX and I tend to watch Fox News over CNN, MSNBC, or even the local news. However, the irresponsible actions of Geraldo Rivera following the murders of 32 people at VA Tech have me seething. In the rush to grab headlines Geraldo Rivera did not do the simple, the responsible, the simple thing of confirming his facts.

Geraldo Rivera, with no evidence at all, slandered VA Tech alumnus Wayne Chiang by identifying him as the murder of those 32 people. Just in case he needs to know, the murderer of those kids, those teachers, those friends and family is named Seung Hui Cho. An innocent man has been put in danger by Geraldo Rivera's irresponsibility. Mr. Chiang has received death threats as a result of Mr. Rivera's form of yellow journalism. I can only imagine what hells Mr. Chiang has been going through as a direct result of Geraldo Rivera's pandering and posturing for his image.

Mr. Rivera has always been in a rush for bigger and better headlines, his escapades range from discovering that Al Capone's treasure vault didn't exist to giving away battle plans of our troops in Afghanistan. One would think that after being in the TV "reporting" business for the last 30 years, Mr. Rivera would have learned to think things through, and actually confirm the facts before sending false information out to the entire world.

Since Geraldo Rivera is more concerned with breaking a 'story' and grabbing the next "Vault" headline than with truth, and since his actions reflect directly on FOX News as a whole. I will not be watching your news program while Geraldo is still a part of your organization.

Geraldo Rivera owes Mr. Wayne Chiang a direct, public apology and FOX News owes the public Geraldo Rivera's resignation. If these two conditions are not satisfied, myself and others will be contacting your sponsors.

I await your response.

CTV E-mail:

Hello,

My name is XXX. I am not sure whom I need to contact to address
my concerns regarding your sloppy reporting, so I figured I would start
with "All". I figure this correspondence will be forwarded to the right
people in your "news" organization.

I need to vent my disgust at your sloppy reporting. I am speaking of the
news report on the VA Tech massacre that featured photos of innocent
Wayne Chiang along with the VA Tech murderer Sueng Hui Cho. I realize
your station was probably parroting Fox News' Geraldo Rivera's
"discovery" that Wayne Chiang was the perpetrator of these crimes.
However, even Mr. Rivera didn't show the pictures side by side. I have
some simple questions: Do all Asians look alike? All gun owners? Does
your organization actually CONFIRM rumors and stories? Obviously not; in
fact, your comparison of the photos takes the yellow, muck-raking
journalism beyond Gerldo Rivera's stupidity. I am still trying to figure
that out.

Your media company owes Mr. Chiang a public apology and your customers
deserve a full retraction. It's ultimately up to Mr. Chiang if there
will be any lawsuits, I will be among the many contributing to get it
moving along.

I await your response.

Just saw this thread, here is my e-mail, I expect a canned response:

Fox News has been my preferred source for news for years, because I feel you have a better balance than the other news sources. I am however appalled at your continued inclusion of Geraldo Rivera as anything but comic relief. His hit piece against an innocent man, "Geraldo identifies VT shooter' is nothing short of criminal. The police investigating the incident had informed Geraldo that Mr. Chiang was not a suspect, and he continued to cling to his defamatory misidentification. Geraldo should at first be ashamed, and then suspended or fired. Mr. Chiang received death threats because of the misidentification. Bigotry takes many forms, being bigotted because someone owns and enjoys firearms is just one of those forms. i will be expressing my concerns to your sponsors.

They don't care about viewers' opinions. haven't you guys learned anything from Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson? You have to write to Geraldo's sponsors. It's the money that matters.

Newly posted on Wayne's Page, seems Facebook is now enforcing a no- weapon policy of sorts:

Hi Wayne,

Facebook has decided that any pictures of people posing with guns or arsenals in a non-sporting context are inherently threatening to other users and thus a violation of our Terms of Use. As a result, these photos have been removed and will not be restored. Thanks for your understanding in this matter.

I posted this in another forum but had to add it to this as soon as I found it.

I'm at lunch, walking down the street when Mr. cheesy moustache happens to be walking towards me. I said "Hey Geraldo! Outing that kid last week was low, even for you." He of course ignored me. Made my day :)

so, i'm guessing basically we have been collectively ignored at this point? nobody seems to have gotten any sort of interested or concerned response from anybody. i wouldn't have started watching fox news again even if he had apologized.....no dice unless he was fired. their blatant disregard for the viewer's opinion settles the case for me, though. if only gerry did a blog that you could comment on. maybe certain types are thinking twice about that sort of thing after the whole zumbo incident.

This silence is really disheartening right now, but we have not forgotten.

Remember, this is for all of us. One day, it could easily be one of us shown on TV and tried and convicted before a television audience for nothing more than being a gun owner.

Ya'll, thanks for the tremendous support! I figured I would give an update on my current situation. Currently, I am seeking legal counsel on possible recourse. We have a pretty strong case against CTV and am in the process of determining jurisdiction. We are also considering a case against Fox news, but the journey ahead will be very difficult. I will update whenever significant events develop. Once again, thanks for all the help and support through this entire mess!

Dude, I'm seeing paid-off student loans, a sports car, and some class III stuff in your future - and an apology - what they did to you was NOT excusable - and was frankly downright racist. Let's look at the first guy who obviously ain't from around here...

Remember that as you job hunt, etc., your possible employers may think "Hey, could this Wayne guy maybe have been connected?" and hire someone else - over your lifetime, the damage could amount to millions.

I just came across this and spent 30 minutes reading through it. I remember seeing the Geraldo piece, or part of it because I usally exercise my right to change channels when he comes on. There are no depths Geraldo won't plunge to grab a bit of ratings. He is absolutely disgusting.

As far as Wayne's "arsenal" I have only two comments. The first is I wouldn't spend that much on those types of firearms. The second is nice collection and it would be fun to shoot a few of those. Very nice.

From the blog and the news interviews, Wayne sounds like an impressive young man.

email to fox after this post.

The thing that gets me is that there has been no attempt at an apology? Maybe because that would be admitting guilt? I too switch the channel when I see geraldo.

Wayne, I too got the canned response from Fox when I wrote them. Personally, I hope that you DO sue both CTV and Fox, and if they offer to settle, or lose the suit, please, don't let them get away with the "no admission of guilt" thing. They need to fess up, and they need to apologize to you, publicly, and on the air.

wayne, that's what i hope for you as well. i'm not big on lawsuits, but this is one case i would like to see some positive outcome from. i hope you make loads of money, but i hope at the top of the list of what you will be paid is a public apology....you are owed that much, at the VERY least.
