GRNC Alert 05-10-07:
HB 1847 Hearing Moved to Monday - Act NOW

Act Now: HB 1847, "Report Lost or Stolen Gun" In House J-I Committee Monday!

This piece of bad legislation is having a hearing Monday in a committee
that is quite hostile to your rights. It will require all of your
feedback to stop this.

NOTE: We will be sending out another message Sunday night. Monday will
be "feedback day" and that alert will have a new list for you to contact.

Properly called "The Prosecute Lawful Gun Owners Act," the bill would:

* Give you only 48 hours to file separate reports for each firearm stolen.

* Cover not only known, but also unknown losses. For instance, if you
have your gun safe cleaned out by a burglar and you report the 30 guns
you remember, but there was that one you forgot you had, you could be
held liable for that one because you "reasonably should have known" it
was stolen.

* Virtually require you to retain a pistol purchase permit for each
handgun stolen, creating a new pathway to handgun registration.

Will you let this happen?

* E-MAIL all members of the House J-I Committee using our auto-emailer:
* CALL the swing voters listed below:
* SHOW UP at 3:00 pm on Monday, May 14 at the NC General Assembly in
Raleigh. We want to PACK THIS COMMITTEE HEARING. If you can make it,
contact Paul Valone at for directions and details.

Selected members to contact:

Rep. Annie W. Mobley - 919-733-5780 -
Rep. Larry D. Hall - 919-733-5872 -
Rep. Melanie Wade Goodwin - 919-733-5823 -

Dear Representative:

HB 1847, the so-called "Report Lost or Stolen Gun", which should more
properly be titled "The Prosecute Lawful Gun Owners Act," is a
completely misguided concept.

"Prosecute Lawful Gun Owners Act," would punish the *victims* of
property crimes, rather than criminals who commit those crimes, for
failing to report the theft of firearms they might not even know were
stolen. Consider carefully if it is wise to kick a voter while he or
she is down by victimizing that person a second time with this atrocity.

I strongly urge you to vote NO on this insidious bill.
