Has anyone here ever shot any specialty ammunition such as tracers or incendiary cartridges? I see them for sale from time to time and have always thought it would be fun at the range to put as the last round in a magazine.
Anythoughts on these or where to buy and any risks to modern polymer frames?

I was at the range once and another shooter was using tracers made my Hornady I believe. It was fun watching.

The older Military tracers can be hard on barrels as the burning trace element is exposed to the barrel, but it would take a lot of rounds before a noticeable degredation in accuracy showed up. More worry about corrosive priming compounds (US made Military 1960 or earlier is a pretty safe guide line).

The Hornady ammunition is perfectly safe as the trace element burns in a channel bored into the center of the bullet and uses a special trace element. But, I thought that Hornady had quit making them because thier supplier ( for the trace element) could not supply it any longer.

There is some modern made tracers available and I do know a couple of shooters that have trace rounds as the fifth and sixth last in thier magazine ( rifle and pistol) to indicate when they might be running low.

They are loaded to standard pressure, so there should be no harm to polymer framed pistols.

Do a general search for tracers on the web, should get some responses.

Be warned these can start fires and most ranges do not allow there use and certain locals/ municipal/ counties restrict possesion of these rounds. Check your local laws.

Back in high school when I worked at the local Skeet and Trap club, I got to watch a guy fire a round of "Dragon's Breath" ammo through his 1100. At dusk, no less. Very pretty.

Then I, and the rest of the trap peons, got to run around for half an hour stomping out the grass fire he started. Not as pretty.

Sigh.

I think they use Phospheres in Tracers.:)
