Taurus Tracker .45acp or Smith 625

January 14, 2003, 10:12 PM
I am looking at both and price is a big concern. The Taurus is alot cheaper NIB but was wondering if anyone has one and how they like the Taurus compaired to the Smith. It will be primarily for Range use. I noticed the wieght on the Taurus 4" is 23.8oz and the Smith is 40oz thats a big difference is recoil bad on the Taurus or does the porting help alot.

Thanks in advance.

???? Do you want a gun to last all your life and then some or just till you shoot it to pieces.

I have a Taurus Tracker in 45 Colt and it is a great gun but it is not of the quality of a good Smith.

The Trigger is a stiff pc 12 lbs but it is nice and smooth. tThe recoil impulse is a good push with little muzzle rise with the ported barrel.

I would put it in my CCW carry rotation if I could get some nice wood finger groove Grips for it.

OBTW it is the size of a S&W K frame.

I've got a Taurus .357 and a Smith 625. Both are nice guns and I'd bet my life on either of them. If it came down to making a choice between the two I'd keep the Smith. It's a better made gun.

I understand how the $150 difference in street price between the two guns could make the Taurus seem attractive, but I'd hold off until you can save up a few more dollars and buy the S&W.

Always buy quality and you won't be disapointed...

Have the 425 Tracker and Smith 625.
The Smith is more accurate.
Parts are more available for the Smith.
That includes the different types of moon clips.

I prefer the Smith. I have more than one 625.

The primary use for the Taurus, especially shorter barrelled versions, is for carry, either open or concealed. It's fairly small and light but packs a good punch. It's also suitable as a home defense gun. I haven't shot it, but I've heard it shoots well, with possibly a rather rough and heavy trigger pull, especially double action. The S&W 625, on the other hand, is a big, heavy, gun. It can be carried, but concealed is a tad more difficult than with the Taurus. It, too, is great for home defense. What it's got is great sights and a great trigger, both in single and double action. It's heavy and stable, too. These qualities make it more suitable, IMHO, for the purpose you specified, i.e., range shooting. I love mine for these reasons. Quality is as good as it gets. So, based on what you've told us, I'd save up and buy the 625. You won't be disappointed.

I'm extremely happy with my M27 Taurus Tracker (.357). Shoots very nicely, with minimal kick (the rubber grips, I suppose). The is the only wheelgun I own, and I've owned S&W products in the past. I use the Tracker for concealed carry when I'm not carrying my Steyr M40.

Good Luck, and Happy Shooting.

Oh, it's an accurate bugger too. :)

To get the S&W quality, durability, and accuracy, all in a more portable package, go for a 625 Mountain Gun.

It would be a nice companion to the 5" you ordered.
