I have a Cobra 4in with what appears to be an alloy frame?? It is a .38Special. It is very light. I called Colt and the serial number puts it in a 1952 year production. The action is tight. The bluing on the gun is very good. The frame seems worn in some spots like the blueing didnt hold up on that metal. How much is this worth? I havent seen any on Gunsamerica or anything. They are all 2in models that i have seen. Thanks for any info.

Although Colt advertised the Cobra in longer barrel lengths, I've seen only one with a three-inch bbl. and NONE with longer barrels. They must be darned uncommon, if not truly rare.

The frame is adonized aluminum, and it will flake off; it isn't real bluing, like on the steel parts. That's always been a big probelm for all light alloy framed guns.

P.S. In one of his earlier books, Jeff Cooper opined that a Cobra with four or five inch bbl. would be an effective, light backpacker's gun.

And Gordon is having one built as we speak. I found a nickle Cobra on the Internet like new made 87 with FACTORY lime colored fron sight insert but no frame, yes all pieces but no frame. I paid $50 , then found 4" new nickled Police Positive special barrel for $25, so I took an old late 70's Detective special I had that was needing tune up anyway and haveing John Lawson put the parts together into modern nickled Police positive special 4" for previously mentioned back packing duty. I have a realitively low pressure load that will push a hard cast 173 Kieth bullet to 950 out of 4" barrel which should stop most anything hit in head. :D PS: I do have an old style Cobra from 60's with 3" barrel but is worth $500 at least and I don't think is that strong....
