OK, everyone says (urbanlegend guard on\ A model 66 or 19 will be great with 38 spec all day long, but if you shoot 10 full house 357's it will explode!!!!!!! But if you have a 686 you are wasting your time shooting 38 spec just shoot all the Full tilt and Boogie 357's it will last for centuries. Then someone will say "GET A GLOCK" "No a RUGER" They last forever even Noah's KGP161 is still tight.\urbanlegend guard off)

What are the dimensional differences between a K and a L Frame.

could I put a 65 heavy barrel in a 686, what is the difference.I know the grip is the same, is the L cylinder larger, are the L barrel threads larger??????

I do not want to get a N frame, they are estetically akward to me for a 357 I know I can put Atomic Power and depleted u235 slugs in at 27 or 28 and they will take it forever.

L Cylinder larger; forward part of L frame slightly beefier; most importantly, L forcing cone not have thin section @ 6 o'clock position.

You probably could put a 65 heavy barrel in a 686 frame, but why would you want to? The 686 has a full underlug to help balance the heavier frame and is surely as thick. Maybe you don't like the underlug or enclosed ejector rod. In that case just have a smith remachine the barrel the way you like it. The threads don't matter, those can be recut. If necessary you can always cut off the forcing cone and threads and just machine a new one onto the base of the barrel. Gunsmiths have been doing this for years when building Smolt Smythons with a S&W frame and Colt Python barrel. If the barrel doesn't come out long enough, just have him build you a barrel from a Douglas blank to any contour you like. I have a S&W mod 57 (.41 mag) with a 6" bull barrel made from a Douglas blank that was done by Jim Clark.

.....and the grip frame is the same as the "K"!!
