Can I get a gunsmith to silver solder a long flash hider on a barrel to make it 16" overall barrel and then will it be considered a rifle so I can add a stock?

Yes.......but how long is your barrel right now?
And what is the pistol.

Pistol is the 556p and barrel is 10 inches looked at MFI and they make long adapters that have a fake can over it to make it look cool not just a pencil sticking out.

Just be aware that according to the ATF, you cannot legally turn it back into a pistol once you've made it into a rifle.

Yep, that's the current ATF interpretation. According to them it's a one way trip. I'm not sure they have a legal leg to stand on, but who wants to be the test case....

This can be done paperwork and tax free, correct?

I believe that you can turn a pistol into a rifle with no paperwork. But I believe you need paper work to turn a rifle into a pistol.

I'd check first thou, just to be sure.

Yes there is nothing required to do a rifle conversion but you can NOT ever go back without a tax stamp.

You can change it into a rifle but to reach the length, you have to permanently attach the muzzle brake or other device. Cannot just be threaded on. To go back to a rifle as was just mentioned, you have to file a form 2 or form 1 plus the stamp and its an SBR. Just got through our ATF inspection last week and I asked that question specifically as its a common one.

If I had a working SIG 556 Pistol?

I would sell the dang thing for enough money to buy a rifle.
Somebody will be dumb enough to pay big bucks for it!

What point would there be in welding a bloop tube to a 10" 223 barrel?

You are still giving up all that velocity with the short barrel, and velocity is the only thing that makes the .223 rifle effective.

If your in a SBR friendly state, make it a SBR. A 556 Shorty is hopefully in my future.

I agree with both RC and FIVE, if I am going to have a 16" barrel hanging out there I want the velocity and once you have a single SBR you will likely have more.

velocity is still 2300-2400 with a 10.5 inch barrel and m855 ammo. that is a 20% drop in velocity, and none of that comes back when putting an extended flashider on it.
