Did Remington do away with the little detent ball on the barrel locking collar that the magazine cap screws down on, on the 870? Is this not needed any more? I just got a new barrel and it does not have this, is that a problem?

The barrel you have was intended to be used on a Remington Express model. The Express uses a different design of magazine tube and end cap which needs no detent.

Barrrels intended for the Wingmaster and Police models still have the detent.

If your Express barrel still has a hole for a detent, one can be installed. This will require the detent, detend spring, and a special punch to stake the detent in place.

The punch is available from Brownell's.

Negative on the hole being already there.

My Express barrel (original Remington) has a detent, and the original cap has the little dimples along the circumference...

great, another one of those: "oh wow, this has worked really good for years". "ok, let's change it"..............

I like safetys on lever actions too, and don't forget the "series 80"....

they use a plastic part with "teeth" that mates up with matching "teeth" inside the mag tube cap in order to lock it in place.

oh my gaadd!
