SHOT Day 2 - Ruger

OK here it is, one of the things I wanted to see the most.

I like it. Some will argue that it's not exactly true to Coopers idea, not sure why but OK. Bottom line is I like the rifle, I think Ruger will sell a lot of them, and I will likely get one.

I do wish it could use M1A magazines. Not that I need 20 rounds, but the mags are available. Or G3 mags or whatever. But, it's a Ruger mag since it's basically an M77 action.

The flash hider might be a bit out of place, not really sure that's needed, but overall the rifle was comfortable and well balanced.

Another stock option. The factory iron sights are quite usable I think.

Very nice Scout rifle. Do they have futuure plans for it to have a synthetic stock as an option. I'd very much like to get one that is at or under 3 kgs (6.7 lbs) per Cooper's original highly desired specs.

Seems XS is first into the aftermarket for this rifle. They have a replacement long rail available.

Working on a new sight package as well later this year.

Good for them and good for me. If they don't buy it, the better chance I can get one.:D

Bottom line is I like the rifle.

Definitely. Me too.

My local dealer has one in stock. It handles very nicely and the sights do look usable. And boy is it light.

The new Ruger Scout Rifle. I'll be honest, while I don't have a specific need for this gun, it's exceptionally well-thought out.

It also has the best factory trigger of any Ruger I've ever handled.

Yeah. I said it. A Ruger with a good factory trigger.

The gun is light, clearly handy, and slavishly conforms to the specifics set forth by Jeff Cooper. Seriously cool.

I should have posted this photo first.

Ruger is now making the Mk. III with a threaded barrel from the factory.

The primary reason people thread barrels on rimfire guns is because they expect to put a sound suppressor on them.

Take a minute to think about that.

Ruger, the most straight-laced gun company in the world is now actively catering to the NFA crowd.

If you're still boycotting them because of something that Bill Ruger said decades ago, guess what:

You can quit now. We've won.

That's a Gemtech suppressor screwed onto the end of that pistol.

^Nice...

I like .308

Looks like a nice rifle.

Anyone think Ruger will eventually make a semi-auto version as well?

Deadduck wrote and excellent review on this rifle. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=563389&highlight=ruger+scout

Looks like the street price is right around $750

Minor point but when did manufacturers start stubbing off the bottom of the recoil pad to make it look like an amateur did it instead of continuing the line of the bottom of the stock?

I'll be the first to say it, I don't get it. I'd much rather have a lever action.

You know, this rifle looks like the perfect new rifle to win the war- 95 years ago. I think the huge magazine defeats the best part of the Scout concept~ the slick, rapid handling and general enjoyable ease of use for many things. Now it's been saddled with all this bulk, so why not just go for an autoloader?

"If I could have only one", it would probably look like a sporterized 1917 in 7mm Rem Mag or .30-06, with a 24" or 25" barrel, and non-detachable magazine. It wouldn't be this abomination, which ain't fish nor fowl.

I'm more excited about the 22/45 with the threaded barrel.

Hmmm, on the 308 scout according to the manual you have to remove the rear iron sight to attach the scope rings. Seems like they would have found some way to have BUIS on something like this (IMHO). And it should come with the 5 round mag to meet hunting laws in some states but it's a $64 purchase. If they do these things I would buy it.

Bill Sr. (who I knew, and had a number of conversations with) must be spinning in his grave. But times change, and I'm sure the company's current management is looking at sales, and what's selling. Money after all, is money. In the end it's always the market that dictates what a company will make - or go out of business. You don't grow by making what isn't selling.

And looking at this development, think of the shock and outrage within the gun control community. Among the "old line" companies, Remington, Mossberg, and Smith & Wesson aren't making them feel any better either.
