Can a smoothbore musket be loaded with Brenneke slugs?

I am curious: would Brennekes or any other drag-stabilized projectile work well in a Brown Bess or a similar gun?

You can certainly shoot it through a smoothbore, but whether you have any accuracy is a separate issue. It should fit the bore less it bounces its way through.

At Breed's Hill, when the Rebels ran out of shot, they used rocks, nails and anything else that was readily at hand.

Properly patched/saboted, they should shoot fine. The only question would be performance. Brennekes are the finest slugs that I have ever used. I suspect that a whole lot of science is behind that fact. It could be that their drag-stabilization is tuned for a certain average muzzle-velocity that BP guns may/may not be capable of.

It makes for an interesting idea.

First try some basic accuracy tests. The group that begins to open way up is past maximum effective range.

Then you could perform "keyhole" tests in paper targets set up at about 50-75-100-etc. yds. downrange. The first target to present "Keyholes" (non-circular holes in the paper) would be beyond your maximum stabilized flight range. The two should roughly coincide.

Most cast foster or brenneke style slugs only run around .68-.70 caliber, as they are meant to fit through choke tubes. My home cast Lee's run .68 almost exactly, but they're "patched" with a standard 12gauge target wad for use in a rifle barrel. You'd need a lot of patching to fit a .75 brown bess. Now a .69" French Charleville musket ...hmmmmm.

I just pulled apart a 20 gauge Brenneke slug. It measures .630". It will not fit down the bore of my TVM Fowler, which is .620. Don't know if it could be resized to load. No way to shoot it to test for accuracy.

It may fit another brand or style of muzzleloading smoothbore with an oversize 20 gauge barrel.

What if you put a slug in a plastic shot cup and rammed it down the bore? Seems to me the skirt would expand and give a better seal than the raw slug.

The Lyman cast foster-type slug in the red Remington wad (12 gauge) loads in my 12 gauge sbs Pedersoli. Haven't tried it at the range yet...interesting.
