New project on my bench

After two run ins between my our dogs and the local skunks, The Wife has decreed that I may do WHATEVER nessaccery to rid the local country side of them. I took that to mean it was time to spend money. Already had the Ruger 10/22, so I ran to CTD (what a christmas crowd I ran into) and picked up an ASI dragonov stock and a muzzle break. Got some flat black model paint to paint my eagle mags with, and now I'm just waiting for my trigger upgrade springs to arrive. It shoots five into a nickle at 35yrds even with that Ruger trigger. I think I also need a rubber armoured scope to replace the Bushnell. The Wife took one look at it and stated that if she catches me useing her make-up to camo my face again she's filing for divorce. Now I have two black evil rifles, these things are like potato chips. Got my eyes set on a Rem 870 now, might as well add a black evil shotgun to the collection.

The real reason for all that camo an tactical black is so the neighbors can't see you. Getting rid of skunks is a very precise science.
Step 1: Place some sort of bait in the neighbors yard, close to the road.
Step 2:When the skunks show up, find some good cover (upwind) and ventilate the little suckers

Step 3(the next day): Call the neighbors an tell them to clean up the road kill in their yard, its stinks to high hell!

No one in their right mind is going to check things over to make sure it was really a car, hell no one in their right mind is going to go near the thing ;)

Pal of mine told me to shoot them in the lungs. Theory being, they have to inhale to spray. It apparently worked the one time I tried it, but that isn't a good test. He swore it was true. (Just behind the front shoulder, below the spine, is where I'd go).

I'd stay upwind the first few, anyway.

The best bet is to bait them to a remote location with tidbits, cat food, dog food, sardines or whatever. Sorta like deer to a feeder. Then when you have em all at the "banquet table" let er riiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppp!!!!!!!!:D

Then you can proceed with the mass burial.

Interesting. Christmas Eve, we were at the wife's parents house and her step father ran in the house talking about an albino skunk he saw in the barn. So the three men (not to be sexist) ran out each with a 22 and a flashlight to look for it but it was nowhere to be found.

He was pretty excited.

Nothing to do with being sexist but rather a intelligence. Lets see. A skunk is reported. A rare one in fact. Three individuals immediately try to find said critter with flashlights in hand and possibly aprehend said critter.

Others sit in the house and watch from a safe and potentially less smelly difference.

Nope..no sexist remarks there. :D

Several cans of tomato juice would have been a good idea. ;)

I've shot 3 since we moved out in the boonies, and I've purt near perfected my technique. I dig a hole about 3 feet deep out at the far edge of the front yard area (about 50yrd give or take) and put some cat food on top of the mound of dirt. When the skunk comes up to take some cat food I shoot it, then run out, knock it in the hole with the shovel and fill it in as quick as I can. I learned this trick from the Eskimoes who used to catch polar bears in a similar manner:D . So far it's worked well. But I haven't taken one with my skunk tactical rifle yet.

I did learn one thing from my uncle years ago. The .410 is not a good skunk gun. Especially from 5 feet away. Especially in your garage. Especially if the skunk is under your wife's brand new Delta 88. Especially if your wife's brother is a divorce attorney. Maybe some people shouldn't have guns after all.

What I have done when skunks become a problem is catch them in a live trap( 7X7x32 havahart) then transport them to a remote area of our property ( they will not spray inside the trap) and turn them loose and shoot them. I don't enjoy doing it but when you have dogs and the the skunks are coming right up to the house you don't have much of a choice. To remove skunk odor use liquid soap mixed with peroxide. It must be a fresh mix.

As far as I know a spine shot is the ticket for Mr. Steenky. I learned the hard way a couple of years ago. Had one leg trapped and dispatched him with a headshot from a .410. The shed and yard glowed blue for a week. This neck of the woods is completely infested with them and they move in as fast as ya' whack 'em. Saw one about a month ago that had only a small black stripe down each side, and was otherwise totally white. I will get him this spring and make a cover for a handgun out of his hide. The wife will love it.

My dad used to trap skunks in the 40's for the pelts.I remember him skinning them.He allways said to shoot them in the spine at the base of the skull. With a severed spinal cord they can't spray.
