HK FP-6: Love or Hate?

OK, I'll admit: when I cut my first shotgun teeth it was with an 870 riot and an 1100 - but when I went to get my own, I fell for the FP-6 as the perfect all 'round 12ga.

With the new mag follower (the original was plastic - and started to dissolve! EEeek! HK replaced it with their new one free and they were almost next-day in service...), it's superb in patterning and begs for a scope when I stuff it with slugs.

No, I've never shot clays, nor have I ever hunted with a shotgun: I am into firearms in general soley from the "social predator control" perspective.

I'd love to hear your experiences with the FP-6, as well as what goodies fit it: tac light, mag extension, and so on - as well as "If I had it to do again, this is what I'd buy," and why.

I've been wanting to get one. I want the ghost ring sight model with the extended magazine tube. I think that barrel jacket just looks cool. That's important to me in my weapons choices, and good looks are only icing on the cake of a fine weapon.

What did yours run you, price wise? Do you have sights on yours? Do you have the extended magazine tube?

Nope - no ghost ring sights - and I'd love to find a mag tube extension compatible for it (other events are claiming much of my time: I became a great-aunt today!).

I honestly don't remember what I paid for it - I'll have to look it up. But: Susan and I love it so much she wants us to get a matching second one so we can compete together side-by-side!

Trisha, how about doing a side by side comparison with an 870 and that HK, then posting the results here? Shoot for score on some "Practical" COFs, and note the time.

Much as I like the 870, there's got to be some R&D going on in Shotgunland to make a better "Serious" shotgun. Let's see if that toy of yours is "It".

A girlfriend of ours own a new 870 riot, and we've done (to date anyway) informal practical COF's and the FP-6 really shines - but there's no pronounced margin between the two... until:

You take the FP-6 apart to clean it! It's a marvel of simplicity and over-engineering

In hard-core scoring, the FP-6 is accurate with slugs to 2" at 25 yards, and patterns tight and evenly with 00 buck - but it's got a longer pull than the 870.

Susan and I plan on doing just as you suggested at the next IDPA shotgun side match with our friend - and I'll be sure to post the results here. I am a little surprised to see (both here and IRL) so little familiarity with the FP-6!

(Scratching my old grey head)...

Trisha, maybe I'm blinded by my experience, but I never thought the 870 was that hard to clean.
Thanks for the input, and good luck with it.

I'm blonde....

The 870 isn't hard to strip and clean; but the FP-6 is a dream! Find one and try it sometime!

(And I may just give in and get the new Entry Gun and go through the paperwork... sigh...)

I'll take your word for it,Trisha. I'm old, cantankerous and quite happy with my battery of 870s.

However, I'd like to see some real competition for the 870s to arise, just to keep Big Green busy. It might help return things to the days of scrupulous QC, top service, and new ideas for something besides that #@$%^&* bottom line.

Saw a review of it in SWAT mag. I am toying w/ the idea of a shotty with optics mounted...for fun.

Too bad Benelli Novas or M1 S90's don't come stock with a pic rail.

I wish the FP6 carbonfiber came with the rail on it! How hard can it be, HK???
