I know I should know this. What is a wombat? I know, its some kind of animal. But it is bugging me. I will be there. Stevo

March 9, 2004, 01:43 PM
A Wombat?

Well you have door #1
Or door #2

Door #2 is more a more accurate portrait, but door #1 is closer to the spirit perhaps...

March 9, 2004, 03:51 PM
Wait you forgot door # 3 :) This is a spy photo of Combat-Wombat just before he opened up a can of whoopie. :D

I'll try and make the shoot. I maybe going to Az for a seminar that weekend, but if I dont and the weather is good, I'll make the trek.

March 9, 2004, 06:22 PM
Well, "wombat" really isn't some special symbol to me or something like that, as many people think. I just came up with it out of the blue, and it seemed cool.

March 9, 2004, 08:25 PM
Would you like for me to bring out the 10/22 "sniper"rifle :)

March 9, 2004, 10:07 PM
Yeah, 45R, that would be great. I've been wanting to shoot an upgraded one, so I can evaluate whether it would be worth it to upgrade ours, too.

And, if you could...
Bring those sweet Ti Chopsticks!

We'll be bringing:
Stock 10/22
Browning Buckmark
S&W Model 19
(It's all we have :( )

March 10, 2004, 01:10 AM
If I can make it out I'll bring out the 10/22. Regardless the upgrades are worth it, esp the trigger work. A VQ target hammer makes a huge difference in the trigger pull. All that for just 40 bucks. Are you shooting irons or scoped?

I'll bring out the chopsticks also :) I gotta use something to eat my food.

March 10, 2004, 03:14 AM
I'll be the geek with the big grin...
Please save and bring empty milk jugs and bottles!

Watch jugs of water explode (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/gallery/albums/gatherings/jugs.mpg)

March 10, 2004, 04:45 AM
I'm there. The 10-day for my new (to me) Colt is up Saturday, so I'll bring a bunch of ammo for people to try it out. :)

talbalos- I think we have a winner.

Ted? Is that you from calguns.net?

March 10, 2004, 09:49 PM
Pretty cool video, Sven, but what do you think my parents thought when they saw "jugs.mpg" on my computer?

March 11, 2004, 12:14 AM

March 11, 2004, 01:00 AM
Hey Wombat- I may be able to make this one. If so, I'll have my Mini-14 (stainless w/ Hogue stock), Colt .38, Win 12, 10/22 (these 10/22s are pretty ubiquous, aren't they?), and k-31.

March 11, 2004, 01:39 AM
Ireally wanna go me some guys, but wouldn't ya know this is the weekend of my long awaited Luis Auwerbach rifle&carbine course in lovely Turloch!!!

March 11, 2004, 09:00 PM
unforturnely I will be memorial park watching little kiddie running around looking for plastic eggs. I anyway want my collection of cans and plastic containters let me know

March 12, 2004, 08:04 PM
More good news; I just received my two cases of Fed M193 .223- Great stuff, Lake City brass of recent vintage and all NATO spec. I highly recommend Wholesale Hunter.com (http://www.wholesalehunter.com/); $3.19 a box of 20 (I just missed the $2.99 sale) and delivered fast.

So that puts me at around 3k rounds of .223... better bring another AR to the shoot.

March 12, 2004, 08:28 PM
I will be going to Az for a seminar that weekend so I wont be able to make it.

March 12, 2004, 08:32 PM
45R- Well I guess that means we'll just have to have ANOTHER range day later in the season when you can make it.

What a shame, making us meet up again to shoot guns in the great outdoors like that. You'll probably make us cook and eat some barbecue as well. ;)

March 13, 2004, 02:42 AM
Read this link http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/rifle.asp?ITEM=1 and see if shooting that Army Qualification Test would be a challenge for anyone. It sure seems like great practice to me...

Jim Diver
March 14, 2004, 02:55 PM
I'll be there... will be wearing my black TFL shirt.

March 14, 2004, 08:45 PM
One of these days you guys should consider a Laguna Seca Shoot and gathering in Monterey CA. Nice range and nice people running it!

March 14, 2004, 10:33 PM
I'll be bringing my 'fred's aqt's' will Los Altos let us shoot them is a better question. Generally ranges poo-poo rapid fire at 25m with military-pattern rifles :)

On a similar note, what kinda "gun games" do you all think would be fun to bring? Fudge, forgot they don't allow holster use at los altos, thats lame. Anyone have a steel target say, a 5" steel plate, we could put at 100 yds, and shoot on the tin can line. One shot per person, offhand, you miss, you drop out, until one person remains?
Sounds fun to me.

PS assuming I can find wheels, I'm totally coming.

March 15, 2004, 01:07 PM
atek3- no joy on the steel targets. They won't allow it. I've got a fat garbage bag full of .5 liter plastic water bottles though.

Hey Sven? Do you have any more of that tempra paint for the water bottles? If not I'll pick some up in the city this weekend.

March 15, 2004, 03:55 PM

Fred's AQT is a 11x17 paper. I don't think it is an issue. We need a target holder, though.

I also have a set, somewhere. I'll bring it along.

March 15, 2004, 04:11 PM
pbhome71- oh I'm familiar with Fred's targets; I was just answering Atek3's question on whether or not it was ok to use a steel target plate on the 100 yd. tin can range.

March 15, 2004, 06:02 PM
Sorry, my bad....

What's the rule for the 100yds tin can range? Can we put target anywhere, or does it have to be at 100 yds line only?

March 16, 2004, 12:41 PM
pbhome71- Well there's the 100 yd tin can range, which can be fun, but let's be honest- we like seeing stuff blow up! So the 40 yd. tin can range is where it's at. Plus they allow rapid fire (.22 RF ONLY ) on the 40 yd. tin can range. Ok so it's not much of a challenge at 40 yds. but hitting a plastic water jug with a .22-250 Ballistic tip is a hoot to see.

Plus Sven has this trick where he squirts some concentrated tempra water based paint in the water jugs, for much Technicolor 'Splosion Goodness!

edit- I totally blew off your original question, sorry! Yes, on the 100 yd, tin can range, the targets must be at the 100 yd mark.

Sgt Stevo
March 16, 2004, 07:47 PM
I bought a yugo sks. Anybody going on the third, know how to break it down, etc? this aint no m-4, but it looks like a good plinker. thanks Stevo.

March 16, 2004, 08:00 PM
Got yer back on that Sgt Steveo- I'll see if I can dig up a copy of one of the old SKS manuals I have laying around for you. Did you get stripper clips?

March 16, 2004, 08:12 PM
I was thinking about put different target at different distance. But you are right, 40 yards is much easy to see bottles exploded.

I'll bring my SKS, Mosin, USP 40 (per CW request), 10/22, CZ 452, and may be M1A. I also can bring Chrony, if anyone want to play with it (please dont shoot my skyscreen.... :)

Sgt Stevo
March 17, 2004, 06:22 PM
I dont have stripper clips. I had to look up what they were. I know nothing about this gun. But, I will bring a p-99, sig 226, 245, high power, luger clone, glock 34, etc. them I can figure out with my little brain. thanks gunner, you da man..

March 17, 2004, 06:53 PM
Sgt Steveo- I can set you up with a starter set of stripper clips; be a shame if the Mutant Ninja Zombie Robo-Bears™ attacked and you weren't set up to defend your perimeter properly!:D

March 18, 2004, 04:12 AM
For those new to rifles, both the Scout M1 Carbine or the Kel-Tec SU16s are going to be fun on the 40 yard tin can lane...

Sgt Stevo
March 18, 2004, 03:57 PM
gunner, were can get a mutant zombie bear? that might just solve my home defense problem. thanks I will kick down some ammo to ya on the range. And Steveo will probly become my new nick n ame. OK I guess. I get called worse. Check out the the dressing down I got in the pepper spray debate by some Air farce clown......

March 18, 2004, 04:12 PM
Wow. Sgt Stevo- in my mind I kept adding a second 'e' after the 'v'. Just noticed that. My apologies. I have a good friend named Steve and I often call him 'Steve-o'.

aw shucks... now I'm all embarrassed and stuff…

man... can't believe I did that...

March 19, 2004, 05:24 AM
"talbalos- I think we have a winner.

Ted? Is that you from calguns.net?"

[Bugs Bunny]"Mmmmm. Could be"[/Bugs Bunny]

I may be able to make it that Saturday. If I do, I'll bring my CA neutered FAL, an M1A Scout and ....

March 22, 2004, 03:12 AM
Did you say a chrono? Oooh...I have this straight-pull carbine and this 1938-vintage Nazi-surplus 8 x 56R stuff that a bunch of people would love to find out about.

I think that also means I have to bring all three of the S.A.S.S barrels. I've been itching to find out what the .358 Winchester REALLY does out of a 15" barrel. And the .308, too.

But what I HAVE to find out is if the .243 Winchester barrel lives up to the reason I bought it in the first place. It's supposed to be my 3000-foot/second handgun...

There's The Monster, also, but there's the question of where it actually shoots, and I don't want to drill the machine. Hmmm.

Worst to worst, Pat, I'll let you shoot 'em. You just have to make sure the chrono's far enough out that the muzzle-blast won't knock it flying. (That is, of course, presuming I can con you into actually dropping the hammer on a three-pound gun chambered in a 9mm rifle round. )

Note to self: gloves.

March 27, 2004, 01:52 AM
My wife said that I can go next week, unless there is something urgent coming up. She said that she might even come with me.

I think I'll bringing a couple of things.
- Mosin 91/59
- CZ 452
- Ruger 10/22
- USP 40 - for CW to try
- Browning Buckmark
- Erma baby Luger
- Mauser C96 in 9mm Luger
- oh, and Chrony for H.R.G. to try.
- and may be a K-31.
I hope to be there around 9:00am. See you there.

March 27, 2004, 03:20 PM
Folks, look for the "Molon Labe" hats and name badges and don't be afraid to introduce yourself.... I think I saw some 'lurkers' last time who didn't introduce themselves... bad form!

Gary H
March 28, 2004, 08:50 PM
I mentioned this to my wife and she didn't bring up any pressing engagements..so I think it is a go. Is there any structure to these get togethers? Do you do handguns in the morning and long guns in the afternoon, or is it whatever..whenever?

I saw some SKS's above. I can bring an SKS and some corrosive ammo on strippers. I think that the SKS is lots of fun to shoot. I have just as much fun shooting the SKS as an AR. Are folks going to shoot any trap?

March 28, 2004, 10:50 PM
Unfortunately that Saturday is one of the few days that I will not be able to be there as I will be celebrating my daughters 4th birthday. Priorities don't cha know. You can't beat the fun of shooting at the tin can range. Hey Sven can ya take some video to be viewed later by those of us who can't make it? Have fun.

March 30, 2004, 03:40 AM
Will film video - hopefully through my spotting scope, showing the bottles going....

April 1, 2004, 12:59 AM
Hmmm, it's not looking great for me. It's still a possibility I could convince my dad to bring me, but I might not be able to go. Let's just say it involves powdered magnesium and a smoke cloud over the... nevermind.

April 1, 2004, 01:49 AM
Oh man, in 4th grade my buddy and I... uh... borrowed some magnesium ribbon from our friendly open school science lab... never got caught on what resulted, but I DID get caught lighting a can of bug spray.... was carried home by my ear.

If it doesn't work out, just let me know any weekend day and I'll meet you and your dad at my local range, Sunnyvale Rod & Gun.

April 1, 2004, 02:39 AM
I'll bring:

Glock .23
.22 conversion for above
2 or 3 Garands
.300 win mag?

Jim March
April 1, 2004, 03:23 AM
It looks like I've got this ancient Yamaha "cripple triple" running well enough to do a trip from Sacramento...

April 1, 2004, 03:32 AM

April 1, 2004, 03:38 AM
Magnesium? You two have got nuthin'. In high school, we mixed our own thermite in chem lab. :D

Hope you can make it, C-W. I'll try to be there at opening. I'll bring some hamburgers and, if I remember, buns for the BBQ.

April 1, 2004, 01:42 PM
C-W...thats funny. Mg huh........... That stuff is fun to light.

Anyways if you cant make it to the SF shoot Skunk and I are still working out details for the SLO shoot in Mid or Late May.

Everyone have a great time. I'll be in Az at a seminar. Hopefully I can find a place to shoot some full auto!!

Take care have a fun and safe time!!!

April 1, 2004, 02:00 PM
Ahh it's looking very nice out and Saturday is a great day to shoot guns (ok let's be honest, is there a bad day to shoot guns? I thought not.
Can I get an 'Amen' my brothers and sisters?)

Just look for the most obnoxious neon blue Hawaiian shirt- I'll be in it.

I'm in for a cooler of water. A little Thai BBQ chicken, I'll score a bag of charcoal for the 'que and some paper plates and stuff.

And guns. Lots of guns.

Oh and I promise on a stack of pre-ban 30 round AR mags this high that I'll be there earlier this time.

April 1, 2004, 02:46 PM
Oh and I promise on a stack of pre-ban 30 round AR mags this high that I'll be there earlier this time.

QBG- Your killen me!!!!!!!!!!

April 1, 2004, 08:02 PM
Yeah, I ordered a pound of the stuff (pretty high mesh) off a chemical supply site. It's pretty cool if you splash water on it when it's burning, it creates hydrogen gas and a cool white flash.

I'm in the process of making a deal with my parents that if I get all these chemicals and commercial firecrackers out of the house, I can go to the shoot. It's looking okay, but It'll be the last minute before I know.

April 2, 2004, 02:52 PM
Last second conflict requires me to be on the far side of the Bay Area sphere of influence (Anitoch) tomorrow morning. Won't be joining you folks Saturday morning :(

April 3, 2004, 02:10 AM
i just found a car to borrow, so I'll make it.

April 3, 2004, 02:26 AM
Goodbye firecrackers.:(

Hello shoot!:D

We'll be bringing our S&W Model 19, 2.5 in. .357, Browning Buckmark .22, and a 10/22, the only guns we have:(. I hope someone brings an extra 10/22 magazine, it seems I may have misplaced our only one.

While everyone's in the bright, flashy, obnoxious clothing color mood, I'll be wearing a bright green shirt.

As for food, we're bringing some potato salad, some rolls, and a nice steak, with some charcol brick-thingies.

See y'all there!

April 3, 2004, 06:09 AM
count me in with chips (maybe salsa, dunno), a finnish m39, my tikka, my , my XD, and my ruger mk II.
I'm leaving berkeley around 9 am. So i'll get down to los altos at around whenever.

Gary H
April 3, 2004, 11:05 AM
Good shooting..

I won't be able to make it after all. Would rather shoot than work, but work it will be. Thought that I could get things done before today..

April 3, 2004, 11:45 AM
I'm off to buy some food and then to the range. See you there...

April 3, 2004, 12:33 PM
Ok I'm loaded up and rollin'.

For some reason I have the theme from 'Convoy' playing in my head...

April 3, 2004, 12:33 PM
just to prove QBG wrong, I'm not going to wear all black today. (might spice it up with a little tan)

April 3, 2004, 01:38 PM
Last minute business means I won't make it. :(

Have fun, guys.

April 3, 2004, 10:55 PM
I know it's panzy but my shoulder is sore from the combination of two shots from the NEF 10ga and 10 shots from the benched mosin :)

had a good time, nice meeting you all.

nice chicken QBG

April 4, 2004, 12:27 AM
Oh, dude, I have a huge bruise on my shoulder, especially from that NEF 10 ga. You guys just HAD to pressure me into shooting it, didn't ya?

Thank you everyone very much for letting me shoot your guns and "borrow" your ammo... I had a great time.

April 4, 2004, 12:33 AM
That chick at the pistol line was checking you out dude!

And your dad was cool. I wanted to hang out and talk to everyone, especially him. Anyone who introduces himself " Hi! Are you with the Chat Room? I'm Combat Wombat's Dad, and not really a firearms enthusiast" is right on by me! Good for you Dad! Wombat, don't let him down...

Some nice collections there. Didn't have a chance to shoot them all, much less all the ones I brought!

Marciano, thanks for the water jugs! Getting a hit on one of those with the 12ga. slug was great! A wee hydrostatic shock for the folks at home...

Steve-O you need a wheel barrow bro!

Good on ya guys for putting it together...

April 4, 2004, 01:33 AM
Nice meeting everyone, what a great day for shoot! Thanks to everyone for sharing guns and ammo.

April 4, 2004, 02:25 PM
Yeah, that was one hell of a shoot, but where on earth were Jim March and H_R_G?

April 4, 2004, 02:45 PM
Thanks to all - that was a lot of fun! Pictures turned out pretty well, will post them soon.

April 5, 2004, 08:50 PM
First set of pictures.

Combat-Wombat's "My First AK-47"

Pipsqueak hoses the opposition in extreme tactical M4 style.

This is SgtStevo and his boomstick, a N.E.F. 10-guage... that's right, a 10 bore. With high-brass magnum shells. Did I mention that the shotgun only weighs about 5 lbs.? Can we say 'recoilicious'? Yes. Yes we can.

Atek3 and his Tikka space-gun.

The THR NorCal Mob; back row, left to right- Jason, Atek3, Pipsqueak, SgtStevo. In the front, left to right- Sven, yours truly (did I not say it was a bright Hawaiian shirt?), Combat-Wombat, Combat-Wombat Sr.

Missed out for the BBQ and the groupshot: Buckskinner, PBhome71, Marciano and probably some others I've forgotten.

An excellent shoot, great BBQ and oustanding company. Many thanks to all who were there, and already looking forward to the next range day.

edit- thanks for the name Atek

April 6, 2004, 10:14 PM
Nice too meet all you guys. Gunner, thanks for fixing my sks. And wombat. Dont worry, when you hit puberty, the big ten wont hurt so much. Stay up. Stevo.

April 7, 2004, 11:11 PM
Reckon it's time to plan the next one? :o

April 11, 2004, 01:45 AM
How about we make it at Chabot (http://www.chabotgunclub.com) next time. I can reserve a 50 yard range at Chabot and we can pretty much do anything we want, including rapid fire and draw and fire from holster, if qualified. We can run IDPA style stages with rifle, shotgun or pistol, or plink w/ targets that we bring (no glass please), or do some position shooting w/ .22's or ???

Only thing is that Chabot is pretty busy so their 50 yard ranges are booked up well in advance. If we can agree on a date, and if one of the 50 yard ranges is open, then we're golden.

If y'all are interested, let me know.

Curmudgeon, aka Marciano

Gary H
April 11, 2004, 01:51 AM
Chabot would be great..but in order to do anything that we want on a range, you must be a R.O., or better cause they certainly are very careful as to what gets done where.

April 11, 2004, 03:49 AM
This is not a problem. I help run the Jr's/Smallbore program and I used to run a 3 gun team there.

April 11, 2004, 04:16 AM
When's the next one... I keep missing these because of my work sched...

Well, IDPA style stages would be great, or for those firing from the holster for the first time.. maybe shooting an IDPA qualifier. That would be a simple from the holster activity. Maybe finding a date and starting a new thread would be a good start.

I'm all for it. Chabot sounds good. Sunday morning would work out best for me.

Should we open another thread?

Persnicklewitz! :banghead:

Missed this one, dang it! Unexpected car trouble (Read: flat tire on range day.) dented the funds and the available time. Rats.

I'll make the next one. Met this English lady who's a hardcore conservative. NRA member, no less. Owns a couple of SWEET guns, but has never actually gone shooting. (They were her husband's guns.)

Looks like I get to expand her horizons. I'd bring her here, but she's got no online access for some reason. Suffice it to say I'm workin' on it. You-all will get to meet her at some point, rest assurred.

Been to Chabot. Nice range, but no plinking! All hail reactive targets! Chabot's got sillouhettes, and a 200-yard range, but it's only accessable to MEMBERS. Nertz. We'll think of something.
