I'm thinking early fall is the right time for our next Bay Area get together at Los Altos- Maybe August or September. Yeah, it's still June, but I think it's good to plan these things in advance.

These are fun shoots, previous attendees include Sven, QuarterBoreGunner, atek3, Sgt_Stevo, pipsqueak-Just to name a few.

Any thoughts? Dates that would work out for you?

Aren't any of you folks near Concord Sportsman's? They do get busy on the weekends, but I think that is a good sign considering this is California.

Yeah.... when?

Me and the kiwi just got back from a trip to Montana... I saw so many guns on that trip and am now inspired to do another range day.

Got to shoot a blackpowder gun at the range in Libby, MT... cool.

http://www.madkiwi.org/photos/blackpowder.jpg

Also got to visit with Kit and John and Oleg.
Pics are here (http://www.olegvolk.net/gallery/kit-john)

Sven! where are you?

What a damn fine idea. We've got our regularly scheduled excellent weather now and it seems like an excellent idea. East Bay or whatever.

Someone put their foot down and make a decision on date and place. I'll bring the ARs.

Sven! Where are you?

edit: So labrat, did you like the smoke stick?

I'd be up for a shoot. Just got back from the local indoor range (Jackson for you SFers) and boy was it crowded. Open to any of the aforementioned ranges - Concord, Chabot, Los Altos, etc.

Hey y'all. Do we want to do it at Los Altos this time, or are there other ranges in the Bay Area people would like? Los Altos is a beautiful range- wonderful area up there and a fantastic drive up. But, perhaps we'd like some variation. It's all up to you guys. I'm open for most weekends (assuming my dad is in a good enough mood to drive me up there- the Bay Area Mafia combined with the HS/LC Crew means a fair amount of shooting and driving!:D). As long as I get it on the calendar before something else shows up, it'll probably work.

The Bay Area crew is way overdue for a gathering.. when was the last one, April? Best get one in before the weather turns crummy. Here's a few suggestions for dates:

Oct 9/10
Oct 16/17
Oct 23/24

Highpower matches are on the 16th, so that would be my last choice.

Location: Los Altos has worked well in the past but it's a pain for our east bay peeps. How are the facilities at Chabot?

'Twas fun. I actually got to shoot another one, not pictured, with the two trigger thing. Sorry, don't know technical terms. The owner of the guns loaded for me. I think he actually hunts with it. Pretty cool.

madkiwi got to shoot a luger and I so much fun with a Winchester 9422 (thanks to Topgun) that I had to buy one. I'll hopefully have it by the time this shoot gets organized.

We missed out on going to the range in Missoula with Kit, John and Oleg because we had to drive up to Libby but if you look at the pics (link in previous post), you'll see that they had lots of fun.

edit: you do remember madkiwi and I are about 15 min. from Jackson?

If this is going to happen-

Oct 2,3 is out- we may go to the Reno Convention Center gun show and the machine gun shoot at the Mustang Range (http://www.mustangrange.com/flash/machgun.htm) in Fernley, NV

Oct 10,11 is the long weekend, might be motorcycling in the Sierras.

Not sure if Chabot is the place to go- no rapid fire, no soda can or bottle range, no sillouettes. Also no cameras!

Other than that, I am looking to get together soon.

From Calguns:

3rd Sunday of every month, CHabot in CAstro Valley opens one of their 50 yd ranges (Range 5) to plinking after 12:30PM.

Tried it for the first time last month. People brought out all kinds of targets: bowling pins, fruit, water bottles, network servers, hard drives, furniture and pots. Only rules are no glass and clean up after yourself. Ask permission before bump firing.

Handguns, rifles (no 50 BMG's) and shotguns OK.

Only costs $5.00 paid to the Range Master running Range 5. Don't need to pay the $12.00 at the range office unless you plan to shoot on the fixed distance ranges for rifle or pistol.

http://www.chabotgunclub.com/

Note that the above isn't listed on their calendar on the website, so it might be prudent to call first. As for not allowing cameras, I've brought mine many times and not had a problem. I think you just need the permission of the person being photographed.

So I look over to the wife sitting on the couch and ask "Hey honey, do we have anything planned for next weekend? The 23rd?"

Dead silence. Glare. "What?... did I forget something?" She gives me that little head tilt that tells me that I've done something really stupid but I haven't realized it yet...

THINK MAN THINK!

Ah...wait. Yeah that would be it.

Bill2- Guns and ammo are ALWAYS an excellent idea!:D We usually try and do a little bbq action as well. So I guess we should start the list:

I'm in for a bag of briquets if someone can bring lighter fluid.
I'm also good for a bunch of flank steak for the q' and the plastic forky/knifey/spoony stuff.

And I'm still trying to unload a bunch of PMC .223 so if anyone needs to feed a Mini14 or whatever I can set you up with all you need... within reason of course (why am I getting rid of this ammo? We'll once upon a time when I was still in the business, I was able to pick up a couple cases pretty darn cheap... but that was before I found out it wouldn't function reliably in any of my ARs worth a d**n. So there you go.)

We usually meet at the 40yrd tin-can range and spread out from there. And I promise, cross my heart, that I'll remember all the plastic bottles and jugs that I've been saving... and keep forgtting.

No food available at the range itself other than soda and junk food snacks.

Check the Los Altos Rod & Gub (http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/) site for details.

WenD,

I am glad you are the one who pointed out your finger on the trigger, it's good you know the fundamental safety rules, even if you forgot one in the all the fun.

I'm glad the inadvertant double on Labrat's Kimber didn't wig you out too much!

Might I respectfully suggest next time you go shooting, don't wear a deep neck T-shirt. I guess it didn't happen this time, but hot brass has a "Murphy's Law" aspect to it. According to other women shooters, nothing burns quite like brass falling "down there".

Until next time,

madkiwi

atek3
November 2, 2004, 03:01 PM

madkiwi,---yes thanks for the suggestion...i avoided wearing a hooded sweatshirt (did this in the past and shells turned up in the washing machine), but will definitely wear a different shirt next time...don't want a hot brass down the shirt:)

I really liked both the kimbers, but i was certainly surprised by the light trigger pull on labrat's...I wasn't anticipating that I would accidentally shoot in rapid sucession...but i liked both guns a great deal (perhaps a heavier trigger is better for me)...

madkiwi
November 2, 2004, 05:34 PM
1911's are now my favorite handguns. My Kimber is rock solid, and I love everything about it.

I have a Sig Sauer P229 in .357 Sig that gets little range time. There's just something about shooting a .45 that warms the heart.

I know you said you were going to get a Glock, please reconsider! If God had wanted handguns to be made of plastic, he would have told John Moses Browning to make them that way!

madkiwi

atek3
November 2, 2004, 05:44 PM
oh please. Glocks are rock solid combat tupperware. :)
No matter what you feed them, they work.
Same can't be said for many 1911's, without lots of polishing and tuning.

WenD,

Don't listen to Atek. Go to "The Dark Side".

Isn't she pretty?
http://www.gunshopfinder.com/Kimber/ltp2.jpg

Glock's are a lot of things, but good-looking? Glocks are popular with police departments because they are the low bidder! But serious cops that have to fire their weapons in action (SWAT) are using Kimbers and Springfield TRP pistols.

Our friend Kitiara likes her Glock, but she only bought it after she broke the mag release in her Kimber, after putting over 5000 rounds through it!

Sure, Glocktalk gets a lot of traffic. But 1911forum.com is a happier place. Nirvana in a handgun.

atek3
November 3, 2004, 05:04 PM
just an observation I've made. Many people go from glocks to 1911's (inc. the kimber), few go from 1911's to glocks. Maybe you should get the kimber first. Put a few thousand rounds through it, and if you still feel the need to go plastic do so.

Yes, it is Fajan stock.

The rear sight is a bit more forward than I would think. However, it works ok. The front sight is a bit too thick. I think I'll change it to a thinner one.

Thanks,

Wend, buy a glock. I have owned over 50 weapons of all types. And I now carry a glock on my permit. 1911 TYPE GUNS ARE MY FAV AS WELL. hOWEVER. I have a fast v-8 at home. But I drive a new Volvo most the time. My point is this. the volvo does not need tuning, etc. It is done. So I play with 1911 type guns. But I use a Glock everyday. Stevo......

Sgt, I think that's probably great advice...I'd like a solid everyday piece that takes minimal care right now....and THEN I'll buy something more fun down the road

In the Day late, Dollar short department. I will probably be at Los Altos Gun and Rod this saturday for a couple hours in the early afternoon. Unless work demands that I be in the office

Stevo: If you COULD carry the 1911, would you... THAT is the question.

Is there a next shoot setup? I have two/possibly three 20-21 year old female employees that want to go shooting for the first time. I'll have three if I can get my other employee to cover. All bright straight "A" University students, fun and beautiful. So, it is in someones best interest to let me know. I'm just coming out of hiding and thought that this get together would be a good way to introduce them to shooting. The interest is actually coming from their side. They know that myself and one of my other doctors (female) were avid shooters. In fact, my other doctor just retired and is moving out of California to North Dakota to open a gunshop. Anyway, they want to give it a try.

Let me know. ;)

why don't we have a shoot at richmond. Its closer to you and to a lot of the east bay crew (including myself). Or chabot...

Chabot is more of a drive, but Chabot is a nicer facility. We can pack a lunch and eat at the tables near the main building. All of these women live in the Berkeley - Fremont corridor, so that works for me. The down side is that Chabot is a carefully controlled range where you must bring politically correct targets (no silhouettes) and I don't think that we will be able to arrange shooting from the holster.

Gary,

I have never been to Chabot, but I'm up for it. I have a couple of .22lr pistol, and rifle, this should be good for beginners.

Tell me the date and I'll try to make it. I think we should open a new thread.

I'll get a firm date from the women and post in a new thread.
