Umbrella??

I was walking home from teaching, in the rain, and a dog was about 1 inch from clearing the fence, barking at me, showing its teeth..

I reacted, folded up the umbrella and was about to pop that dog, but his belly caught the brick fence, and so he didn't clear it..

I have a knife in my pocket at all times, but not fast enough to pull it out...

I thought later on, I wonder if an umbrella is effective against something like a dog? It was all I had in my hand, I wasn't going to "club it", as the umbrella is relatively easy to break that way, but was going to jab the end in (hopefully) something the dog cared about, like his ribs (eyes are too hard to aim for). Fairly big mutt too..

Suddenly opening a closed umbrella in a dog's face will startle it, might even scare it away briefly, unless it has been harmlessly teased that way before. Probably less reliable than OC spray.
I think a mean dog would enjoy getting it's teeth into a closed umbrella.:uhoh:

Waiting until the dog was close and then opening the umbrella and yelling will probably startle the dog as stated.

The dog doesn't know the umbrella isn't a wall and will probably try to get around the opened umbrella. Dancing around with the dog may not look pretty but could keep it from getting to you.

Keep the opened umbrella between you and the mutt and if you have to, jab it a few times so it recognizes the fact that when it's touched he hurts.

Jab first, then open the open the umbrella to startle/use as shield.

Just about anything, if used in the proper way can be a weapon or aid in the defense of self/others.

I have an umbrella story. A friend of mine was walking home downtown Oslo one night, when 3 teenagers/young men approached him. One of them demanded that he give them his leather coat. Silly thing to rob a man for, but that's what alcohol does to you ... My friend is extremely small of stature (and he later got to thinking that the coat in no way would have fitted any of the attackers  ), but carried an old, long, steel-shafted umbrella (it _was_ raining). The leader of the pack became just a bit too agressive and close, so my friend jabbed him in the stomach as hard as he could. He fell to the ground and didn't get up, the others desisted and my friend walked home. You use what you've got.

My policy with using everyday objects as weapons is to make sure I use the most effective part of that weapon. So for an umbrella I would use the tip of course. Just remember, if on a 1-10 savagery scale, the dog is performing at level 8, make sure you use the object at level 11. For example, when the dog opens its mouth to bark at you, jam the umbrella as far down its throat as you possibly can. Or if its standing broadside grab the umbrella with the off hand and swing a upward shot or ten right into its ribcage. In my experience with aggressive dogs, extreme savagery works. YMMV of course.

Extreme savagery works on dogs because they are always looking to dominate instead of being dominated [ the pecking order of the pack].

If you can intimidate them [ many ways] that you are alpha and they'll get "bit" if they challenge, they'll usually back off.

Compliance through pain.

Gryphon: Those object you speak of are called "unconventional weapons".

Dogs weigh things, like how much more or less aggressive you are..

I don't think a nice jab with an umbrella would have done that much harm, but my goal was to deter the aggression.. My friend tells me a nice sharp POP to the ribs with the tip will ward off most street dogs..

I never thought about opening up the umbrella as a deterent though... Thanks for the idea..
