I was wondering if anyone had some links to the program for small bore service rifle competitions (assuming that its what the .223 NRA competitons are called). In norway the least allowed caliber is 6.5 or the army standard ( as yet the .308) shot with either a Krag, Mauser or Sauer or if yourè a reservist a HK G3. The norwegian army will begin purchasing .223 cal rifles so I`m just curious about the competitons which youre using .223 is like ;)

I am not a Service Rifle shooter, but until one comes along...

There is no "small bore service rifle" NRA competition that I know of. The .223 shoots "across the course" at 200, 300, and 600 yards in direct competition with the .308s and such .30-06s as are left.

In NRA Highpower, there are two categories; service rifle and match rifle. The M1 (in .308 or 30-06), M14 (7.62mmNATO) and AR15 (.223) with no external alterations are the 3 choices for service rifle. Everything else is a match rifle, and can be any rifle with iron sights that is .30 caliber or less and must be able to hold at least 5 rounds.

In the service rifle category, the AR, when tweeked and with decent ammo is the favored rifle.

Thanks for the answer - sorry for the late response (have been in the field) - if your local norwegian is fully deaf (døv) he is:

A. dull boy...

Or

B. have shoot to much without earmuffs..

Pick any/all of the above ;) .

You know any links to where I may find the rulebook for these matches ? technical as well as competition, its for a bit of comparative studying in a course I`m taking..

Here are the online rules: http://www.tngbbs.com/rifle/nra/hp/

As far as the .223 being "small bore" I'm sure it is when compared to a 7.62, but as far as performance is concerned, it certainly is not. You'll find that the AR-15 A2 or M16A2 has surpassed the other service rifles on the competition field for long range accuracy.
