In the wise words of Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon!"

Yeah, funny.

But there's a critical "political point" here.

Look at how CNN phrased it. Note the phrase "Nice shootin', Rex!" in the byline.

Humans recognize the fundamental justice, decency and "Karma" in self defense. We even support it for dogs, and not just in this case: if it can be proven that somebody attacked a dog and it bit back only in response, it will NOT be declared a vicious animal. Not in the US, or the UK or any other civilized nation. (Might be *watched* for rabies but that's a public health thing versus punishment.)

maybe someone can explain this, im a little confused.

the dogs were his, he couldnt find them homes so he was going to get rid of them, if an animal shelter cant find them homes THEY get rid of them, but since this guy was going to shoot them he gets a felony?!?!?! WTH! he got shot, if i were the judge it throw that one out. just my .02

I do have to admit I am confused as to why he is being charged with a felony when animal shelters do the same thing. Perhaps I am not taking something into consideration?

The four surviving puppies are being treated at the Escambia County Animal Shelter.

PENSACOLA, Florida (AP) -- Nice shootin', Rex!

A man who tried to shoot seven puppies was shot himself when one of the dogs put its paw on the revolver's trigger.

Jerry Allen Bradford, 37, was charged with felony animal cruelty, the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. He was being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to his wrist.

Bradford said he decided to shoot the 3-month-old shepherd-mix dogs in the head because he couldn't find them a home, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, Bradford was holding two puppies -- one in his arms and another in his left hand -- when the dog in his hand wiggled and put its paw on the trigger of the .38-caliber revolver. The gun then discharged, the sheriff's report said.

Deputies found three of the puppies in a shallow grave outside Bradford's home, said sheriff's Sgt. Ted Roy.

The other four appeared to be in good health and were taken by Escambia County Animal Control, which planned to make them available for adoption.

There are some animial shelters that are 'no-kill'. I doubt this is one of them as there are not that many. This is confusing. I will never understand it.

I can only assume that shelters use a more humane method of euthanasia than a .38 slug to the head, hence the "cruelty" charge.

What could be more humane? other than a larger caliber that is.
Just kidding.

The guy was stupid and careless...

But shooting unwanted animals in the head doesn't qualify as cruelty in my book.

To put this in perspective. I work in Hunt County, TX. It's a lightly populated county--81K people in 841 square miles. Rural is the word you're looking for. The county animal control has euthanized about 2K animals so far this year.

I recall an article from the Lubbock, TX paper I read some time back. The article mentioned that they measure road kill pickup in TONS during a typical month. Mostly cats.

I wish I had kept the article about Dallas City animal control. IIRC, they euthanize thousands of animals each month.

My guess is that fewer people would be upset with this guy if he had just turned the puppies out--even though killing them humanely (IMHO headshots qualify as humane) is far more publicly responsible.
