It's been a while since I shot my .45 caliber underhammer blackpowder pistol. The next time I go to the range I might take it out.

Anyone else shoot underhammers?

I was just looking at one of these guys.

Hopkins & Allen by Numrich, .36 - any idea what it'd be worth in pretty good condition?

Maybe about $125 give or take, depending on condition & where it's being sold. New kits are around $150 for .45's, so older factory made guns may be worth less used if not in great shape.
I saw a newly produced .45 at a gunshow for $135, but there aren't many .36's around to be found, so maybe it could even fetch $150 or more from the right buyer.

Hey Y'All...

Anyone got a picture to post of an underhammer pistol (or rifle)?

Seems I recall back in the mid-60s H & A made a "Buggy rifle" and a "Boot Gun" (pistol) that may have been underhammers. Anyone recall those?

Where did the original underhammers come from anyway? :confused:

I certainly do remember the old Numrich/H&A line of underhammers. I have a Numrich Heritage Model .45 rifle with the factory tang sight.

I haven't shot any of the pistols, though.

Underhammers seemed to be largely a New York/New England thing in the US during the 19th C., IIRC.

With a 20 inch barrel it's not the most accurate gun, but it's still a fun short range shooter...and it has a straight receiver similar to the boot pistols.

Now that is some Cool! Does the cap ride "upside down" on a nipple or actually enashrouded in the "hammer"?:confused:

The cap rides upside down, and I pull a piece of a cutoff sock up over my wrist area to protect it from getting stained with powder residue.

I still have the underhammer .45 caliber pistol. It's a replica of a design by American gunsmith Ashabell Cook.

I thought about shooting it all summer and never managed to take it to the range.

WOW! The Dedinski link worked fine. Tried the Baumkircher link but it took me to something that had nothing to do with pistols. Pity.:(
Do you know if either or both have distributers in the U.S., or do they have to be ordered from Germany and Switzerland?
I take it the Dedinski in the pic is yours? How do you like it and how much do you get to use it?

Looked up the Euro which is, I think, equal to about $1.25 in U.S. dollars. But, if I read the Dedinski site right, that would make the cost of that pistol about $211, U.S. funds.
Does that sound right???

Baumkircher is no longer in business, their guns were all hand made and fitted and thus the cost were high. An entry level Dedinski will set you back around $1600.00 US dollars. As far as I know they have no US distributors. I had met Tilo Dedinski at Friendship in Indiana and had a chance to look over his toys and they are very fine and equal the Baumkircher. I shoot mine when I get a chance and it's one of the most accurate guns I have ever shot. I have located a matching rifle that I'm trying to fund that would also make a very fine shooter.

:) Shawnee -Appreciate your offer, but there is a long list of folks who have an interest in my underhammer. The rifle was made a the sametime the handgun was and shipped to the US on the same date. I purchased the handgun and a friend purchased the rifle. The rifle was sold due to a divorce several years ago and I have finally located it. Hope to have it rejoin the handgun some day. As for it laying around, it has a secure home.
