What do I need to do?

I know they register handguns, do I need to register the ones I own now or just new ones? Is there a grace period for one to obtain their license, etc?

Moving to NY with handguns is a pain in the butt. Get ready for a long trial.

There’s no grace period. You can’t bring your guns with you.

You MUST have an FFL mail the guns to an FFL in New York. Yes, I know that federal law allows a non-licensee to mail handguns to FFLs. However, New York State doesn’t allow FFLs to receive handguns from just anybody. They want every weapon that comes into the state to have a paper trail to a licensee.

I believe that you can also bring your guns with you and go *directly* to the police and turn them in. The police will hold the guns while you get a license. This is, however, a precarious route that I wouldn’t recommend. You need to find out exactly where and to whom you must turn the guns over. If you go to the wrong place, you could be in trouble. There’s also the problem of your guns just disappearing.

So mail the guns and then visit the FFL when you get here. He’ll fill you in on what you have to do. It takes roughly 9 months or so to get a license. When you have your interview, make sure you mention that your guns are being held at a shop. The officer should ask for a document on the shop’s letterhead listing the models and serial numbers of the guns, and saying that the guns are being held for you. They can put them on your license right off the bat. I had 4 handguns put on my license initially.

Good luck.

Better idea: screw NY and move someplace reasonable that doesnt have all that Commie garbage. Housing prices in Nashville are still about one third of what they are in NYC.

While I'd love to do VT instead, it's gotten too expensive now.

Anyone know how Washington County is on giving pistol permits?
