First, a little backstory to understand the situation. My dad is a counter-narcoterrorism (just counter-narcotics but whatever) contractor with the DoD in Afghanistan. In the course of our normal correspondence I mentioned to him that the AWB won't be renewed, and his reply to this new information was this:

The AWB didn't get renewed? Does that mean it's ok to import automatic weapons again? My buddies just gave me an old AK-74 to use as a car-gun. It's got a short barrel and folding stock. Never thought about bringing it back though. It'd be a pretty cool souvenir if it's legal to bring back.So, I know enough about the AWB to know that it sunsetting doesn't make importing automatics legal suddenly, but I'm wondering if anyone has even the slightest idea how we could possibly try bring it back legally. I'll definitely be consulting an attorney on this if there's any chance, but I'm asking here really to get an idea from you guys (I was told this is the place for info) as to what my chances are here.

Nope. The AWB has absolutely no bearing on machine guns and other automatic weapons. Zero, zip, nada, a big fat goose egg.

It is illegal to import or purchase any fully-automatic weapon that wasn't already registered with the BATF before 1986.

Yes, but if I remember correctly it require them to apply for an import/export license as well. And then weapon cound only be transfered to other dealers/manufacturers/LE agencies/military.

Yep, with a letter from that agency requesting a demonstration beforehand.

There are several options available. Is your father an SOT?

It would be within his best interest to consult with an attorney versed in these matters.

If he wants it as a souvenir, he can torch cut the receiver in the ATF approved way and bring it back as a parts kit. It is no longer considered a firearm and then he can just bring it in with his luggage maybe. Then rebuild it with a Semi receiver in the states. At least he will be bringing back most of it and not have to ditch the gun completely when he comes home.
