making an AR more evil.. 37mm questions...

Well, it fits under a rifle, so I'll put it here... :)

Ever since seeing the stamped sheet metal 1950's-kid-toy-looking 37mm M203 knockoff at a gunshow a couple weeks ago, I've been thinking of celebrating the end of the AWB by making an AR look just plain superevil.. by adding one of those things.

Given that I'm basically looking for a toy and not some means of making the perfect food-court-defense implement, is it worth the 200 or bucks? I thought it might be kinda fun to find some form of pyro to launch into the lake in a certain friend's backyard some night. ;)

So.. a few questions..

It looks like there's several manufacturers of the same basic m203 clone -- is there any significant difference between them, and if so are some makes particularly to be looked for or avoided?

What sort of tube length should I look for on a 16" bbl? I'm presuming since I'm looking for one of these things the M4 barrel profile would actually make sense?

Are the specialized sheet metal handguards required?

Finally.. provided sane factory loads are used (yes, I've seen the hand :uhoh: ) -- what kind of recoil do they have? Will they Do Bad Things to the the pin of a collapsible stock?

Thank you!

:)

I sort of own one. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back, or asked for it back.
I certainly don't think it is worth $200. I think I paid like $20 for mine. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
I don't know all that much about them. Mine was made of steel. I would want one made of steel for safety's sake.
I didn't know they made them in different lengths; can't answer that question.
Handguards: yes they are required unless you plan on firing it without any handguards, which wouldn't hurt anything. That is what I did with mine. Once the flare launcher is installed, there is no way to use the regular handguards. This will be obvious once you look at it.
Recoil isn't an issue.

They have forums, too:

Good times...

If it is anything like an M203 it should not protrude beyond the muzzle of a 16" barrel. Have fun!
