Rust and Hogue grips - heads up.

Needed to pull a set of Hogue grips off of one of my wheelguns yesterday. i was shocked to find that the stirrup was covered in rust. Pulled the rest off with the same problem. No rust on the revolver frames, so I'm thinking that my fingerprints were the culprit.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I cleaned the rust off with CorrosionX, FYI.

Well, figuring rubber doesn't breathe well, you may want to put a light coat of oil on metal parts that are going to be covered by rubber. Your grips probably held some moisture in, thus the rust.

I learned the same thing w/ a set of wrap around grips on my 1911. All I do now is after every us, I wipe it down w/ a rust prventative.

I too have had the unpleasant experiance of pulling grips off a working gun and seeing orange. What surprised me was the stirrup rusted, but not the frame or mainspring.

I've gotten pretty paranoid about the same issue after removing the wooden grips from my carry 1911 and finding some of that lovely orange tint on the grip frame! I give the pistol a good internal re-lube and external wipe-down with RIG every couple of weeks, and that includes removing the grips. In the summer time I may do the external wipe-down with grip removal every other day.

The stirrup for Hogue's is definitely a flexible piece of hi-carbon steel. Some appear to me to have been gun-blued, while others do not. As to the grip-frame, you need to use a protectant! Sheath, Eezox, or gun wax(or non-abrasive auto wax) will all work to one extent or another. Right now, I'm giving Flitz Gun Wax, not their polish, an extended try.

Coat the offending parts with a thin film of grease. Problem solved.

Yup I usually wipe down the grip frame of any gun when I replace the grips ,I use a teflon based lube it leaves a protective film.:)

My assumption, even with stainless steel firearms, is that if it's not oiled, it'll rust.

Yep. Had a M629 show orange with rubber grips - seems that sweat migrated. I am aware of the cause and effect relationship, just thought that those with Hogue grips could use a heads up.
Thanks!
