Going Off My Rocker

Deer hunting season is coming upon us here in New Hampshire. Bowhunters get to start their craft in about 4 days now. Us riflemen have to wait until November, no big deal, but people are stirring.

When talking at work lately, a couple of my co-workers made snide comments about, "Why don't you just use your AR?" Which got me to thinking. And thinking.

I need a Beowulf upper! Just the thought of ~.45-70 ballistics in my familiar little rifle puts a smile on my face. Unfortuantely (fortunately?) being a broke college kid, I can only dream about it for the next few years. If it is still availible when I have the money, you better believe I'll buy one! :D

Anyway, how many here have one of these monsters? How is the accuracy? What is is like to shoot? What do you feed it? Are those .500" bullets, or .510", or ??? How bad is it to reload for? And how close do you live to me? ;)

Thanks all,
~Nate

There are probably other uppers that would cost less and be cheaper to feed...

Besides, with the proper ammo and placement, the .223 WILL work for deer even though it's far from the BEST choice.

All the gun rags I've read (G&A, Shotgun News, etc.) say it's pretty neat. I like that it uses standard AR mags with a little tweaking - much better situation than a 7.62x39mm upper, IMHO.

Also consider other Alexander Arms products - they have killer 6.5 uppers, too.

I'm curious about real world reports on it too. I've had the opportunity to shoot a .458 SOCOM and liked it, but I think a .50 Beowulf would possibly meet my needs for deercritters.

Either one would be on my short list.

There's a fella who shoots at the range I frequent who shoots one. He let me run a few rounds thru it and even let me keep a peice of brass which I'm sure ain't cheap. He only shoots it at 50yrds, so I'm not sure what it does at longer ranges, but it seems more than adaquate at short ranges. Recoil from an AR weight rifle is, well, impressive. Not quite as nasty as the H&R 45-70 I used to have, but close.

I'm seriously considering one. I also want an Oly Arms .243 WSSM upper, which would make a great long range gun and with 95 + grainers would be quite the deer gun.
