Which gun do you folks think would be better? It will mostly be used for the range, but possibly for duty later on.

Of the two, I voted for the USP mostly because I don't like DA/SA only guns.

If you really like the Beretta, look at the Taurus PT92/99 and save a bunch of money. It can be SA or DA/DA like the USP because of the similar three-way safety.

IMHO get the USP only if you want a polymer gun, or are concerned about resale value. For mostly the range, I'd go with the Taurus PT92/99 and a whole bunch of ammo for the same money as the USP.

I voted Beretta. I've owned one since 1986 and have very good results with it. Haven't tried the HK so I can't give you an opinion on it.

USP, seems to fit my hand better, and the LEM trigger seems to work well from reviews I have seen.

I still haven't picked up a 92, a normal double action pull is almost impossible.

Just got back from the range with my USP9F, truly an impressive weapon. Quick, accurate, tough, and the safety is in a more natural position. The 92f feels not as pointable, though the new vertec I held recently did feel better than the old style. :cool:

Which is why I suggested he also look at the Taurus PT92/99 if he likes the Beretta, but is less than thrilled with only DA/SA operation and a slide mounted decocker.

I've both a PT92 and a Beretta 92, while the Beretta is better to look at, the Taurus shoots every bit as good and I much prefer cocked and locked to DA/SA operation.

I voted USP, even though the grip is kind of big (I guess its because of the polymer mags it uses) it felt better in my hand than the 92fs. The 92fs always felt like a brick to me. I also like the frame mounted safety and decocker.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:

As I am new to the THR discussion forum, please allow me to say a big "HI!" to everyone out there. I am glad to be in company of people sharing my passion for guns and shooting.:)

Frankly spoken, I don't particularly care for either one (I have shot both in the past, though), but I've nevertheless voted for the HK USP, as I think it's a fairly robust, almost "over-engineered" and reliable weapon. Because of this toughness, I tend to say, the USP will give a longer service life and the owner (probably) will have less trouble with small parts breakage. If I remember correctly, when the USP made its debut, it already has passed some tough environment and reliability tests.

Don't know about you, but for me there's another attractive advantage: I don't know what's available in the U.S., but there are topends in "Expert", "Elite" or "Custom Sport" available that makes the USP a rather versatile weapon (Duty, SD, HD, IPSC, target shooting, plinking). Normally, the topends fit well and work well "out of the box" without help of a gunsmiths.

That said, I think the Beretta 92FS got a bad rap about its performance recently. I doubt, it's as crappy as many guys keep telling us. I certainly wouldn't feel ill-armed with this gun as there are far worser pistols out there. BTW, it's the Beretta is much more beautiful looking than the HK.

get the 92fs and save some money. if it's double/single your worried about then get one configured for double only( i forget the exact model, maybe a G) in my opinion i will never own a usp again. there are so many other quality fire arms out there that are just as good and a lot lighter on the wallet. Taurus is good also but berreta is one of the oldest if not the oldest firearms manufature in the world so i trust them more. besides they have so much more experience and the material of which the gun is made, is of much higher quality than taurus in my opinion.

Darkmind , i have to disgree with you. 9x19 is a proven round that is usefull in law enforcement and self defence situations. i can put 5 or 6 rounds center mass very very quickly with a 92fs and in my opinion that is just as good if not better than one or two hits from a 45, 40 or 357. it is multiple rounds impacting center mass that kill, not magic one hitter quiter bullets. go with what works.

LOL i know what your saying WEPS. I was forced to carry 9x19 for four years and it kind of turned me sour. With all our options out there now a days i dont see myself ever carrying 9x19 ever again. Dont get me wrong i'll plink with it and have fun but i wont carry it, Just my .02.


Plus i'm kinda hooked on 40 cal right now.:D

I put my vote in for the 92. You can spend a lot less and get yourself some ammo. I learned to shoot on my Dad's 92. It has been a quality pistol that has help up well for thousands of rounds. I have fired the USP 9, and it is indeed a nice pistol as well. I do not find it to be 200-300 dollars nicer however. You could get a Beretta 92G Elite II for the same money as the USP. As stated, Taurus makes a nice 92 clone. I have medium sized hands and short fingers. . . I can handle the DA pull on a 92 easily, though it did require some practice. The bottom line is that if you cannot shoot the Beretta DA it is not the guns fault. . .

The virtues of the USP are its lighter weight and more compact frame as well as a more versatile safety configuration. None of these really come into play for a range gun. If you have to have condition one or just want to save money, get the Taurus. Just my two cents.

Oh, additionally, I love the 9mm. Possibly the most maligned cartiridge on all of the internet, but it is a great choice in my opinion.

I own a Beretta 92FS and a USP .40 full-size.

Buy the USP if you need to mount a flashlight/laser and if you need to carry concealed for more than a few hours at a time. Buy the Beretta if you do not.

Other than that, it comes down to aesthetics.
