C&S BHP trigger, and shortening connecting lever

I just installed a C&S wide trigger in my BHP, and it works a little funny. If I pull the trigger and hold it, the hammer drops fine, then I cycle the slide and I can feel the connecting lever sliding off the end of the sear lever, and the trigger moves back another few millimeters.

I'm thinking that shortening the connecting lever is the solution. Is that generally safe to do? It seems like all it would do is increase take-up (fine by me), so long as it was still long enough to be able to trip the sear.

Don't shorten anything. That is perfectly normal and something you will never notice when firing the gun. It ain't broke, and "fixing" it would be more bother and cost than it is worth.
