Have a new Rem 700P in .308 . I am going to load up some more 168 Sierra and Hornady match bullets. So far the only powder I have used in the new .308 is Win. 748.

Any other powder and load combinations that others can recommend that has worked well in their .308s?

I use 43 grains of XMR 4064 (that's from Accurate) to give a MV of 2620 fps and sub-moa accuracy. I've proven that load out to 600 yards. Beyond that, it needs a bit more 'oomph.'

I've been very happy with H4895.

I use H335 and Varget. Been shooting H335 for a while. Just did my first work-up with Varget. Looks like it is a tiny bit more consistent and accurate than the H335.

Lots of people often recommend Win 748 and I see that you have used it, too. Are you looking for something specific in your loads that hasn't worked well with 748?

I've used Varget and Winchester 760 and been happy with both. Each one likes to be loaded close to its respective maximum charge.

I really like IMR 4064 and the 175's I can't imagine that accuracy would sour much with the 168's.
There are quite a few good powders for 308, it is rather easy to load for.

Just curious to see what other .308 reloaders are using. I have been primarily a handgun reloader for many years. My rifle cartridge reloading experience is limited to several hundred rounds of .223 and .308 - compared to having reloaded many thousands of rounds of handgun ammo. Appreciate all the replies!

Varget, RE15, H4895, and IMR 4064 are the most popular. I also use H380, it has a lower velocity, but is very accurate and meters well through a powder measure.

Mikul makes a good point. For both Varget and H335, the most accurate loads in my rifle are also close to max loads. I like it when velocity and accuracy occur simultaneously!

Don't know if that is true for other powders.

I recently obtained 1/4 moa with my .308 Ruger MarkIIVT using Federal Match Primers and 40gr of 3031. This was with new winchester brass. I was going to switch to 4064 but Im going to stay with this load for this rifle a while.

Ps. I was using Sierra 168gr Match Kings.

Winchester 748 has been a favorite of mine.

IMR 4895, 4064, BLC-2, H380, Varget, Reloder 12 and 15, and W748 for the lighter weights/760 for the heavier bullets. All have worked very well in my 700 VS

I like 4064 because it also works great in the .22-250.

Here are shots 20 - 24 out of the new Remington 700P using 748 , Federal match primers , Winchester brass and the Sierra 168 match bullet. Looks promising!

Look at that one little guy being anti-social! ;)

Nice group. If any of my rifles shot a group like that I would declare load-testing OVER and go make a lot more of the magic recipe.

Good luck and nice shooting.

I believe the 175gr Sierra has a better BC than the 168gr.

I've found a sweet spot for my AR-10 with the 175gr. HPBT Moly Sierra and RE-15.

I use a lot of H335. Only a couple powders will out do it in the accuacy/speed dept in my 308. And belive it or not the stuff is just SICK accuracy wise in both of my 30-30's. So 2 birds, one stone, happy me.

4064, it is the powder tha Federal is using for their match loads. Go to Snipershide.com and see that it is the powder of choice for most 1000 meter shooters.

42 grains of Reloder 15 with a 168 Grain Sierra Match King and Federal 210M match primers is a combo my Savage absolutely loves.

And if I'm remembering correctly it comes closest to duplicating the Federal match ammo. It's the most accurate load per the Sierra manual. It comes out to about 2600 fps.

Edited to add that I didn't see three feather's post about 4064. I'll have to look into that, didn't know Federal used 4064 in their match ammo. Good information as usual on THR!

How much 748 did you use in that load? I've got a 700VS in .308, lots of fire-formed Win cases, lots of 168 MKs and some of the 210M primers - and one unopened can of 748. I'd be very happy with that group, and I'd like to try to duplicate the results.

BTW, were you using new Win cases or not?

"How much 748 did you use in that load?"

I used 44.4 grains.

BTW, were you using new Win cases or not?

Yes , they were new cases. I used to own a VS in .308. Sold it and regretted doing so many times! A friend of mine has a 700P in .308 and I fired it a few times and really got the .308 bug again! Then this 700P came my way! I am hanging on to this one!

Grassy @ss - I'll load up a few lots from a grain less to a grain more, and see which one does best in my rifle. I will, of course, check the Sierra manual before loading any of it - just in case, you know - but thanks for the info. It should save me a bunch of time in load development.

I'll let you know in about a week or so how I did. I won't be shooting that this weekend, but next weekend is another story.
