After much deliberation, I settled on a Marlin 925 bolt action, wood stock, 7 round magazine. This will be the first .22 that I actually own.

After much shopping, well, it turns out Wal-Mart was as cheap as the pawned guns. And these are brand spanking new.

Funny how Wal-Marts work. I call one, and ask to special order it. I had the Wal-Mart Product number and everything (courtesy of walmart.com). They said, simply, "no." No, I meant, I can come in and do the order in person. "Nope."

Oooooookay....

So I call another Walmart. This one farther away, but has a good selection usually, so I figured I'd just check if they had one in stock. The nice lady took out every .22 bolt action from the case and read me the information and price and gave a nice description.

That was nice. But not in stock.

So I call the other walmart in town. "Sure, come on down, we'll fill out the order form."

OK!

$135 plus tax, 3-4 days barring a last minute detaour of Ivan towards the distribution center, NICS check done, and all is set. It all took about 10 minutes from the time I showed up in Sporting Goods department.

Not bad at all.

I haven't actually seen too many reviews of the Marlin 25 models here, mostly see CZ, Savage, Marlin 60, and Ruger 10/22. I aim to change that a bit when I finally get my hands on it.

I've seen quite a few reviews of Marlin 25's in these pages - all good. Sounds like you got a good deal. The 9XX series of Marlin bolt actions has the improved trigger mechanism. I got that trigger in my 917 and there is a noticeable improvement over the previous .17 bolt action that a friend bought late last year, otherwise it is the exact same rifle.

Walmart can get quite a few different rifles and shotguns...

My Wal-Mart has never hesitated to do special orders. You do have to put half your money down, though, which is annoying...:)

I didn't mind putting my money down. The guy explained that it has to be on "Layaway" so they can order it and reserve it for you when it arrives. Plus, can use the credit card, get the frequent flyer miles, and get the purchase guarantees.

It's funny how different the Walmarts can be, even in the same area.

I had the same thing happen here back in the day when I picked up my Marlin 60. I was originally looking for the bolt action Marlin, so I called one and asked about special order and they said "no, we don't even have a catalog" and the other one said they could but it might take 2 months to get there.

So I ended up getting the Marlin 60 since no one else around town had one or wanted to order one for a fair price. But it has been the only firearm I have purchased from Wal-Mart though.
