Just curious which makes the grade for people here. I've got a New Single Six but I have my sights on both a S&W 617 and a Walther 22. If I bought a long gun, probably get a Ruger auto loader or bolt rimfire.

I have a beautiful Savage Mark II bolt action .22

See it here at: http://www.savagearms.com/markiibv.htm

I've had it for five years and I've fired thousands of rounds through it. Still works perfectly and is deadly accurate.

The only way to go is with the S&W 617, period, end of story.
Oh, and the and the Ruger Super Six,
Oh, and the Ruger 22/45 semi-auto.
There, now, the only .22 rifle to have is the Marlin lever action.
Of course the Savage Mark II is the perfect bolt action.
And no collection is complete without a Ruger 10/22 rifle.

There, that wasn't so bad! You want the single best hand gun and the single best rifle! Now you have six! Next caliber?
:D

The tip-top best of my .22s is this 1978 High Standard Trophy, the first match pistol I ever bought. It now sports a Volquartsen barrel, Nill stocks, and Ultra Dot red dot sight, but I still shoot it occasionally with the original barrel.

Handgun is a tie between my TT/TH Model 18-4 4" K-frame with nice wood Hogues for pure fun. A tighter revolver has never been made.

vs.

Ruger 22/45 "Great Eight" 8-inch for those "durn, I can hit 12-ga. hulls at 50-yards from a rest!" kinda SHAZAM shots. Can't holster it, though....

Rifle?

Marlin 39A for pure fun

vs.

my 10/22 that is still Ruger because of the reciever, but everything else is Volquartsen.

Just looked at the Marlin site. Is the Henry Golden Boy gun the same as the 39A lever action?

CA-452. I love mine. It is like a laser for squirrels.
Lately I have been thinking about taking the scope off though so I can play around with the long range sight on it.

Hmmm ... well ......... love my Single Six ....... also love the 22/45.

With rifle ... my biggest and most used plinker is the trusty Marlin 60 but ... for sheer accuracy and ''old worlde'' quality ... my Mauser Oberndorfe is the tops (1920's manufacture) .. only bolt but .. built like a brick latrine! :p

Ruger 10/22. When I was younder, I would 200-300 rounds of .22 and stay out in the field all day. Life was good then...

in a wheelgun, the only choice would be a 4" colt diamondback...if you need current production, i guess i could settle for the smith 617 (i have a blued 6" M-17 myself)

my pistol choice would be between a high standard victor or a hammereli 280 in all three calibres (.22 short, .22lr and .32 s&w)

in a long gun i'm partial to...in semiauto, lever and bolt...the weatherby XXII, the marlin 39A and either the cz452 or cooper

My favorite .22 rifle is my Mossburg 44. My neighbor got it in the 30's when he was a kid. Also no serial number, I had to put one on it much later down the road.

It had a broken firing pin, rust on the barrel, and dents in the stock. After I fixed everything 2 of my sons used it for Junior NROTC rifle matches.

I still have it and shoot it alot.

Rifle is easy... 10/22.
Pistols are harder, I have had quite a few double duece handguns.
The most memorable ones...
A High Standard Survivor Pack.
A Beretta M70S Kit gun

The most used...a .22 conversion unit on one of my 1911's(shot 550 rounds out of it two days ago). A light weight officer's frame and alloy Ciener conversion unit make a dandy light kit gun.
Probably get a Marvel unit after I trick out my AK.

Milady has a 10/22, 22/45 and we are planning a Kadet conversion for her CZ in the future.

I'm actually a little surprised that no one has mentioned the Walther P22. I would have thought that might have made a nice choice in a pistol. Sadly, I can't get the Beretta .22 guns here and no new Ruger 22/45, although I do like the idea of a 617.

Mastrogiacomo, to answer your question, "Just looked at the Marlin site. Is the Henry Golden Boy gun the same as the 39A lever action?"

No, not at all. The 39A is just about the finest .22 lever action ever created. It is my favorite .22 rifle.

The Henry Golden Boy is ... well, it's a .22 lever action. No comparison. I've read both good and bad reviews of it. Perhaps it isn't fair of me to go solely on reviews as I don't own one, but it appears the quality isn't anywhere near that of the Marlin.

I'm actually a little surprised that no one has mentioned the Walther P22.
It may make for a fair little plinker, but there are much better choices out there IMO. I maybe wrong, but I think they were a little troublesome when they first came out.

Here's my cz452 with my varmint getup on it. Since then, I've taken off the scope and bipod and shoot it open sights while I'm walking around looking for groundsquirrels. It's comfortable, has a great stock, has great sights, and is just a death ray on those varmints.

"Just looked at the Marlin site. Is the Henry Golden Boy gun the same as the 39A lever action?"

Uhhhh.... No.

Marlin 39A is made from cold hammer forged steel in the reciever halves, trigger, hammer, sear, barrel and lever. It can be re-blued.

Henry's reciever is made of some sintered metal they call "Brasslite" or something like that. It's Pot-metal, and tho' it is "pretty" there is no possible refinish available. The critical parts like trigger, lever, etc are soft and cheap and have a black finish, not a deep lustrous blue.

The front sight on the Golden Boy is made of freakin PLASTIC as is the barrel band.

Marlin hand checkered the American Black Walnut stock on mine, the Golden Boy is stamped checkering.

Marlin's magazine tube is made from high-quality brass with a forged pin at the end. Henry uses cheap aluminum for the mag tube.

I could go on and on, but I don't want to hijack this thread.

One is a classically built beauty. One is only a cosmetic beauty 'till you dissect it beneath the skin.

Favorte .22 Handgun?

That's easy. Gimme a 1911 with a Marvel .22 Top end.

For a rifle...

I'd probably say those CZ Bolt Actions. Quite a smooth action and very accurate.

Of the ones I own, I'd say the S&W 41 for pistol and Marlin 39M for rifle.

I saw a 10/22 carbine at the Wallmart the other day that looked a lot like an M1 Carbine. It's peeked my interest.

No one has mentioned a Remington 541S yet so I guess I will.
Bought it from my friend for $100 dollars back when I was in college. His grandfather was cleaning out his vault and gave him a bunch of guns. Neither one of us knew the value and he wanted the money to go on a trip.

My favorite .22 revolver is now doing "trainer duty" for my oldest son's kids...a pre-model number S&W "Kit Gun". Bought it about 20 years ago at a pawn shop for $25. Not sure I will ever get that one back, but that's OK with me.

Favorite revolver in my hot hands right now is my Single-Six.
Favorite autoloader Ruger MK II.
Long gun favorite is the OLD Marlin 99.
