I have a friend that got a couple of WWB .380 for his birthday and all he has is a 9mm. The guy that bought them for him knew he had a gun, and thought it was a .380, but obviously wasn't sure. Anyway I told him I would try to help him get rid of them, but I need to know the rules for shipping ammo. Anybody have a clue?

I'm not quite sure. They say you need a written declaration - does that mean you could just write "ORM-D - small arms ammunition" on the box and be done with it?

I ordered some ammo but was shipped the wrong caliber. When I tried to ship it back to the seller (some company out west) UPS wouldn't take it. They told me that I wasn't allowed to ship 'munitions'. The ammo was still in the package UPS delivered to me, but that didn't mean anything to them.

I called the company back, and they quoted the UPS rules to me. According to those rules, an individual is allowed to ship ammo but is limited to quantity and frequency. My UPS center didn't care about their own rules, they still wouldn't take the package.

I had to call the company again, and they finally had to set up a pick-up from my house so that they would be shipper, and not me.

So, depending on how you want to ship things, even if you follow the rules, you may still have problems. The UPS driver who finally picked up the package suggested that I do "what everyone else does", just don't tell them what it is.

As far as the written declaration goes, I just shipped a gun back to Smith and Wesson. They specifically instrusted me to not put anything on the package that would suggest there was a gun inside. They don't even put S&W in their address. No where in the shipping process was I asked to declare what was in the package. Same when it came back to me.

I try not to use the brown terd on wheels to ship anything, no offense to any UPS workers, all that I have met have been great people, I just don't like thier policies.

I usually try to use fedex for bigger packages and USPS for smaller. I'll probably go fedex, and just keep it as "Mum's the word".;)

Although I am going to a gun and knife show this weekend up in Mo. I may just take it with me and see if I can trade it.

Some years back the Post Office required letters on the package 1" high that said "FIREARM" .The theft rate jumped 700% !! Fed X and UPS requirement to ship overnite are there because the longer they have the package the more chance that it will be stolen !

I'd recommend you NOT follow the credo "Mum's the word." It's a violation of some part of the Code of Federal Regulations to place ammo in shipment with a common carrier without properly labelling it "ORM-D small arms ammunition."

Local trade is probably your best bet. Or buy a .380 and shoot it yourself! :D

I'm working on that angle, but I don't think it's going to pan out.

Sounds like selling through the forum and shipping it is going to be too big of a pain in the neck, for just a favor I volunteered for. I'll see if I can't find someone local or at the gun show.

I recently sold some ammo here and it wasn't as much of a problem as I anticipated. Check out this thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46369) for some specifics on the rules. Or do a search on "shipping AND ammo" and select titles only.

A couple things I learned: Fedex will not accept it unless you have an account (of some type, not sure which type). I went UPS and had no trouble. You need to label and package it properly (good info can be found by searching around as noted above). The box needs to be rated at 200 lb burst. Once again I'd recommend doing a search so that you understand the rules yourself since you are the one responsible but it really isn't a big deal. Below is the label I used.

i'm not sure, but i'm not sure it even has to say "small arms munitions", just simply have the ORM-D sticker. I say that because the last time I ordered ammo, it was shipped UPS, and the only label was ORM-D.

which was nice, because my apartment building had a package holding service, and they kept asking me what was inside. i really didn't feel like dealing with a potential anti attitude at 1am, and luckily the dude had no idea what an orm-d was, and there was no other label except the addresses.

THANKS a bunch for providing the sticker and its download.

When this thread gets old I have it available to post again when the question comes up here and elsewhere.
