Ak side mount?

I just bought an Ak this past week and when I went to find a scope mount all I can find around here is a reciever job that seems pretty unstable and moves a bunch when installed. Who carries the side mounts for the Romanian Ak's, I need one with a weaver rail on top so it can have a red dot mounted. The sights on the thing are fine for what they where designed for, but not much if I plan on headshooting hogs at 50yds as they run past. Being the front post covers all of the head on a little one.

A web address or someone to call would be nice. I found a couple places with the mounts, but they have scope attached and no Weaver rail.

Thanks

Although not mentioned, you might also want to give this mount some consideration. It is the UltiMak scope mount. It replaces your gas tube and upper handguard and clamps to the barrel for stability. This image is from their website.

I plan on getting one for my SAR1 in the very near future.

If your rifle has the little mounting rail on the side,
Tantal's (http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/kobra1.html) Kobra sight works well. They sell the mounting side plate, too.

Regards.

I'm pretty sure www.tapco.com has an AK side mount that takes standard scope rings. So you can mount the scope you want.

I have one of Tantal's PSO-1 "v" scopes on my AK, and I like it a lot.

I think that putting a scope on an AK is like mounting a rear spoiler on a Ford Pinto... What for?

What for? Even though an AK is not an MOA rifle, you can hit some pretty long shots, if you can see what you're aiming at.

I can get 2MOA from mine when the barrel is cool. I shoot it at 250 yards a lot. Scope helps at that distance.

The AK's can benefit from a scope just like any other rifle. The Kobra series of red dots will allow you to shoot faster and more accurate that with the regular sights. The Kobra sight in itself is just a little more expensive than a quality weaver side mount, and will provide a better stock weld as well as sight picture. Tantal's sight is excellent and full of information. I'd reccommend one of those , from experience.

Keith,

It's all about making the rifle faster to aim and fire, and having a good point of reference. The AK front sight covers most of 6" or so at 50yds and is hard to see to begin with. A red-dot speeds target aquisition and helps in regaining it on rapidly moving targets. It takes the focal plane and drops it to what to me seems like one plane, the dot on the target. When action is fast and furious during hog eradication shoots, trying to stick the front post into the rear notch, concentrate on the post and keep the moving hogs head in the sight frame is a tall order of business. It can be done, but it is slower than the red dot.

The irons will work, took a hog standing still at 250yds with a Turk mauser not to long ago and hit him square in the noggin, but up close and personal with multiple targets to aquire and fire at, I like the red dot. The AK is probably minute of hog at 300yds, but up close you can put em where they need to be with a finer aiming point.

One system that I think is outstanding, compact, and stable is the Millet mount. It replaces the rear sight and doesn't hang off the side of the rifle like the side mounts. It's also more stable than the gas-tube mount. Only problem is that it has to be removed if you want to remove the gas tube.
