I have reamed a 9mm conversion barrel for the Tokarev out to 9x23mm with some extra thoat.
Shooting 158 gr LSWC bullets, OAL = 1.36", Starline 9mm Supercomp brass, and LONGHOT powder, I have achieved impressive recoil.

The Star will only feed 1.3" loads, but is still capable of very good recoil.

Comparing the recoil of 9mm or 7.62x25mm, the 9x23mm can kick twice as hard.

I would suggest that the increased recoil is because you are using a bullet that is much heavier than the guns were originally designed for. Even in standard velocity 9x19mm I can tell the difference between 115 and 124 grain bullets.

I hope that with the heavier bullet you have reduced the powder charge to prevent excess pressure.

Hodgdon max load for 38 Super is 6 gr LONGSHOT , 5", 147XTP, 1.26", 30.9 kcup,
1119 fps

Hodgdon max load 357 magnum 158 gr XTP is 8.4 gr Longshot, 1.58" OAL, 1394 fps 10" barrel, 43.2kcup

I have been shooting 20 gr in the Tokarev and 10 gr in the Star.

Just for some more input, I'm sending this to the reloading forum.

Handloading information:
The Tokarev will feed a wide meplat 158 gr LSWC with an OAL of 1.36".

The Star Super B will feed the same bullet with 1.3" OAL only after some material is removed from the magazine lips to get the mag to release the round 4mm sooner.

Tokarev 9x23 with chamber support that reaches the web, and extra throat:

I worked up loads until the brass failed or I could fit no more powder with:

Win brass, 130 gr 3N37 ...primer falls out
Win brass, 130 gr N105 ...case full
Starline brass, 130 gr Power Pistol ...case full and primer falls out
Starline brass 130 gr N105 ...case full
Win brass, 130 gr LONGSHOT ...case full
Win brass, 147 gr 800X ...case full
Starline brass, 147 gr 800X ...case full
Starline 147 gr Blue Dot ...case full
Win brass 147 gr Power Pistol ...case full
Win brass 147 gr LONGSHOT ...case full
Starline brass 158 gr STEEL ...case full
Starline brass 158 gr LONGSHOT ...case full [Double compression]

I could get more power from the pistols with Starline brass, 158 gr LSWC, and LONGSHOT in double compression than I could from any other combination, by a wide margin.
