You can never go wrong with a good 98 Mauser action. But I cannot say much for using a .308 on varmints. If you are buying it for a plinker the .308 is great but a little on the large side for shooting ground squirrels.

Timney triggers are good triggers but not in the elite class either. I much prefer some of the super triggers like the Jewell that will adjust down to 1.5 ounces not 2 pounds like the Timney. Most people will be very satisfied with the Timney, but for the precision rifleman only the elite type triggers will do.

The stock looks very nice on the weapon.

The Leupold scope is the best there is so no problem there.

I would ask for a 3 day inspection and first check the throat for wash out and also pop in a set of headspace guages. The problem with buying used rifles is you do not know how many rounds have been put through it.

I always pay a low enough price for a used rifle so that if the barrel is shot there is room enough to get it rebarreled.

Considering the fact that you are getting the scope and mounts with the gun it does not seem like too bad a price.

Remember one thing the Mauser is quality. Its not made from cheap castings or sheet metal or plastic. This alone is a great plus. Its rugged reliability and marvelous gas escape system are another big plus. If you are ever sitting behind a gun that blows a cartridge case you will be glad you bought the Mauser and not some of the more modern weapons that often have little or no provision for escaping gases.

I am not familiar with the barrel maker who made the barrel that is on the gun. So I cannot tell you wether it is a quality barrel or not. But I will say this much, the .308 is such an accurate caliber that even mediocre barrels often shoot very well , you may just have to clean it more often and more thoroughly than the highly polished bore of say a Douglas, Shilen or Mcmillan barrel.

I thought the seller was required to offer a 3 day return. BATF regulations. I would be good to ask this before sending the funds though. And it is a Busnhell scope, not a Leupold. May work for years, may not. Either way, it should get you going.

Looks good. The only problem with these conversions is some of them are excellent even if done by an unknown smith and some are far from perfect. I was looking at a 257 Roberts conversion that looked very nice but when I asked the seller about the reliability, he admitted that it only fed about half the time. Worked great as a single shot. I'd have mentioned that in the auction.

I'm looking at a similar heavy barrel Mauser conversion in 6.5x55. Just need to come up with the funds since no one is interested in buying any of my rifles (http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=129894). :(

Everything? No... just a couple guns I got good deals on. Really meant as a low-yield investement. :p

I'm just trying to get a Kahr P9 Covert and a rifle to eventually have converted to 6.5x284. Preferably with minimal out-of-pocket expense. Plus I have a couple unexpected bills to pay. :(
