Given the price point is that the best 1911 option for my money?

This would be my first 1911.

Thanks,
Scott

Kimber makes a nice product & the TLE seems to be earning some nice reviews.

Of course, I could just start with the Kimber Custom II and then figure out what I want to change later. Save on the initial purchase.

From what I've read the Custom TLE is nothing more than a Custom II with night sights and front strap checkering as standard. So, if you like these features, I think you should bypass the Custom II and go straight for the TLE. Around here, the TLE is about $100 more than the Custom II. That will only get you the night sights if you decide to get the TLE features later. Also, I've read that Kimber factory night sights are a bit of a pain to install, so most recommend the factory do it (so there's another $20 or so for shipping/insurance - assuming you only send them the slide). I have no idea what the front strap checkering runs, but a good bet would be around $100 to do the checkering and refinish that area. Only thing I don't like about the TLE is that the finish is essentially parkerized. I'm not exactly wild about that. All in all they seem to me to rate as best values in the 1911 world.
