i tend to believe that a 1911 in any other caliber other than 45acp is blasphemy.

WEPS,
It's a 1911INO

I like my .45ACP 1911s, but I could see myself with a 10mm 1911 or even one of these .50 beasts assuming they got to be affordable enough. I reload, so why not?

I wouldn't pay that price for one, or should say couldn't, but I would love to try it out.
I use to think the 1911 was for 45 acp, then I bought a 38 super.:D

I dunno. It looks interesting, but I'm a .45 fanatic. I've had 1911 in every caliber of mainstream production, but I keep going back to the .45.

I don't know if it's just a comfort factor or the fact that I can use the same ammo for both it and my Tommy gun when I visit Chicago.

Yes you could. My Dan Wesson 10MM is so sweet. Try it, you'll like it. In fact, I'll say that if you're gonna build a 1911 in something other than 45ACP or 38Super, 10MM would be it.

I somehow cannot picture myself walking around with a slide sticking out of my forehead.

The .50 caliber 1911 variant seems to have drawn a collective
yawn after it blasted onto the public scene a few months ago.
For the most part, experienced shooters are a pretty practical lot, and the idea of proprietary ammunition that would likely be scarce and expensive when they could find it wasn't/isn't very appealing. Given the limited number of pistols that will be produced...and the limited production from the one maker...and a very expensive gun that will limit demand for it...
it's not likely that the ammo makers are gonna tool up for the ammo in more than small quantities and probably only during certain times of the year. Sorta like Remington's production of the .45 Auto-Rim cartridge. The demand just isn't there, and neither will be the supply. Think back to the .50 A&E of just a few years ago...

I don't think that I'd relish the idea of paying the going price, and then having to scrounge for expensive ammunition that could well disappear in just a few short years...save for existing stocks that would command a scalper's price. .45 ACP I can get practically anywhere in the continental U.S. for a quarter a round or less. Strictly on a collector basis? Sure..if you've got the money to invest. Very good chance that they'll appreciate
in value for that segment of the market, and to the "Gotta be the first kid on the block" mindset...but not likely a big hit in the mainstream.

Just my nickel's worth...
