Here are the three choices for the Pro 2nd Amendment ribbon magnet (created by GOT). Please vote on your favorite and post how many you want to order. We can order only ONE design unless there is enough demand (at least 250 orders) for more than one. Please let us know if you want "X" amount no matter what or "X" amount only if your favorite design is picked because the quantity will determine the price. Price at 250 ordered is $2.40 each, 500 @ $1.90, 750 @ $1.70 and 1000 @ $1.50. Add $2 per order for padded envelope and shipping. Approximately 5-6 weeks from order to delivery.

Well . . . I still prefer #3 over the others (although even on that I would delete the RKBA part). But I see that, so far, I am alone.

I still think that it should be a "human rights" or "civil rights" statement that is unifying rather than an "in your face" statement. Even those who think all pornography should be illegal support the First Amendment right to free speech. Who can disagree with "supporting our troops" or supporting "___ Amendment Rights"? The red or pink ribbons have a generally positive connotation even though underneith the meaning may be "take money away from others under threat of force or imprisonment(taxes) and give it to _____ for research."

Generally, the "ribbons" have been used not as a rallying cry but as show of support for others. Make your rallying cry with your "Molon Labe" bumper sticker.

In any event, we now know what a "silver ribbon" means. Watch for them on lapels and gowns at the next Academy Awards.

I posted about this on SIGForum, S&W Forum and Glocktalk but there didn't seem to be much interest. If anyone would like to post a link to this thread or email a link to known internet vendors that's awesome. If someone wants to buy a ton of these for a gun shop or for gun shows, that's awesome too. I emailed "dav" (I think that's who it was) about handling the logistics of this but have yet to receive a reply. Would anyone else be able to handle or at least assist in getting all these shipped out to everyone after we order them? Thanks!

Dav (I think it was dav) said he was set up for receiving payments and everything, which sounded good. Magnet America has free shipping... to one address, which leaves a lot of distribution. I don't have a printer for address labels, and I REALLY don't have time to address them by hand, so that would be a start. First we have to decide on a design though! :)

I like #2 the best. It has a simple message - 2nd amendment, shall not be infringed, and a cryptic part, that might cause a interested party to ask questions. I also think It balances better than #1, #1's design looks like its missing something, since most of the ribbon is covered with writing. i will definitly be buying between 5 and 15 of the final design depending on costs.

Andrew Rothman
September 24, 2004, 11:56 AM
Here's what I'm thinking:

AIDS and breast cancer and support-our-troops and the like NEVER had words on them.

The ribbon shape is now well known as an "I support _____" statement.

They became very popular because wearing one was a relatively simple grass-roots action -- at most it took a safety pin and a trip to the fabric store for 50 feet of ribbon for five bucks.

While these special ribbons are fine, imagine the impact if we EACH made it our job to go get a big roll of silver ribbon and a box of mini-safety pins, and made up a hundred, and GAVE THEM AWAY, explaining what they meant, at the next gun show, trip to the range, etc.

THIS is how movements get started -- not by selling trinkets that, frankly, you have to ALREAD be pretty committed to bother ordering and spending money on.

BONUS: With no writing, MANY more people will ask what you are supporting, expecting an answer like "diabetes" or "colon cancer" or something.

I'm not discouraging the ribbons above -- they certainly won't hurt the effort, but they'll frankly be a pretty small part of helping it.

In the classic words of Randy Newman, "I could be wrong now... But I don't think so!"

Henry Bowman
September 24, 2004, 01:15 PM
Matt, my thoughts (and feelings) exactly. That is what I had in mind. That is why I suggested a single color, not a brown/gray or black/silver stripe.

One exception: Almost all the magnetic "ribbons" on cars do include some words -- even the ubiquitous yellow ones.

But, my license plate is 'CA RKBA', so what do I know? ;)

Silver/grey ribbon and brooch pins are easily available at craft stores or Walmart. It's a matter of a couple of minutes to cut a piece of ribbon, fold it, glue it to the pin.

I've got a domestic violence ribbon on my cube wall. The ribbon is 6" long (and 1/4" wide), longer than it looks because of the way it's folded. I'll drop by the craft store on the way home and price up ribbon and pins. If they've got the right stuff, I'll even make up a sample. I'll post the cost per ribbon and time it takes to make them as soon as I've got samples to show.

If they're as quick and easy as I think they'll be I'm more than willing to make up several hundred and send them to anyone who thinks they can give them away -- cover postage and they'll be yours.

Dav - You are so right! Also, sadly to say, I'm willing to bet that one out of four average Americans have no idea what the "2nd Amendment" is all about... want to bet?

My point is: The more questions it poses, the more opportunities I have to explain away our cause.

oldfella, that would be a good idea for someone who has a lot of gun shows/shops in their area, but I don't. Not only that, but I don't want to lay that kind of money out unless I'm sure they are sold, my wife would kill me if I got stuck with 200 magnets! :)

oldfella
September 26, 2004, 07:09 PM
Mattz - I hear what you're saying, and I don't have that kind of money either; I do believe, however, that repeat buys/sales will take place once these ribbons get around. Out of the ten I'm ordering, I'll be giving away at least five right away to gunsmiths/shops and pawnshops I frequent. They in turn will probably be inquiring "where can I buy more of these ribbons". I think many others will also have the same experience. Maybe some one here may want to volunteer to put up the money and reap the rewards.

GOT
September 26, 2004, 07:10 PM
Mattz357, you wouldn't get stuck with that many magnets. I could move a lot more than 10 of those. All anyone would have to do is drop several off at some sporting goods stores and gun shops. I'm sure they would sell. I mean those yellow and those red-white-blue ribbon magets are ALLOVER the place (and every single gas-n-shop store has stacks of them). So moving a couple of hundred of them would be no problem I'm sure.

If this is everyone, then every person who voted will have to buy an average of five of the design that they voted for and we can order both designs #1 and #2. If not, I'm not sure there is enough of a majority to declare a winner.

SapperLeader
September 28, 2004, 03:55 PM
It looks like the average amount everyone wants is 5. I was just going through and counting the people that posted which design they liked versus voted, and only 6 people had definite anwers for #1. Most people wanted #2, or said #1 or #2 but I prefer 2. Since it is such a even split, maybe you could take the orders for both #1 and #2, on the understanding that if there isnt enough for both, it will be only quanities of one type.

And here is a link for the READY-FOR-CLIENT-COPY (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Got10mm/SPORTS/RIBBON2ndAmedment20040928.gif) (in case anybody is interested). I'm sure that http://MagnetAmerica.com has their own graphic artist who would do all the text layout over their own ribbon template design. This "READY-FOR-CLIENT-COPY" version would help them NOT mess up this refined layout and placement of the text, or at least it'll give them a solid start so they're not guessing what we want.

GOT, there is one problem with your designs.

They are much better than what we will receive.

They have 'shadowing' which the printers will not give us (a guess on my part)

I wouldn't want anyone disappointed in what they receive just because they will not turn out quite that nice.

GOT
September 29, 2004, 07:22 PM
"shadowing" ? You mean the gradient in the silver coloring behind the text? If thats what you're referring to, it'll be there. If we still use Magnet America (http://magnetamerica.com/) then they will have that gradient on their ribbons because its on all their ribbons (which tells me they have a template design where all they do is change the color and the text for all their magnet ribbons).
Below is one of their ribbons. I copied their design exactly because thats who Mattz357 said we would be using. So ours should looks just like I graphiced, at least it should according to all the ribbons they advertise on their site.

GOT, I'm more partial to black, but it's up to everyone. When I spoke to Liz at Magnet America, she said that she "thought" two colors for the ribbon and one color for text would still be considered two colors. We probably won't know for sure until the final design is submitted to them, but even if it is three colors it's only an extra 10 cents a piece. Even I can afford that! :) I'll email Liz and see what she can find out for me.

GOT
September 29, 2004, 10:29 PM
Same here. I think it also softens the hard edges of the text. And to me, it makes the grayish color looks more silver.

On the first thread started about "what color is the 2nd amendment" some were thinking that the "blued" finish would be good. So the blue text could reference that. I originally started off with the black text working at making this as inexpensive as possible.
