What would you buy?

I want a scoped .308win rifle which can do serious work out-of-box. I have no intentions to modify or customize it in any way. Typical shooting distance will be 100-300 meters.

- I love the Steyr SSG and everyone here is highly recommending it.

- I really like the looks of the AI (AE model) rifle.

- The finnish guys also know a thing or two about rifles.

What is your preference?

I personally don't have a burning desire for any of them. Between the ones you list, I'd probably go for the Sako.

If only shooting out to 300 yards, nearly any heavy barrel CZ, Howa, Remington, Ruger, Sako, Savage, Tikka, Weatherby or Winchester will work 99% as good as one of the $2,000+ rifles you listed. On a budget, a Savage with the new trigger and a Choat stock will serve you very well. Or a Remington Police or LTR for a little more. You could even look at getting say a Tikka and getting it rebarreled with your preference to length, contour etc Even caliber.

I just can't see paying that much to kill paper at 300 yards but more power to ya! ;)

You should get similar results with each rifle at those distances. What I would do is see which one fits you the best. The handling of the Sako will be somewhat similar to the handling of the A.I.

My personal preference of the three would be the Steyr. I would want a PI (with medium barrel/backup irons) with set triggers and a high quality scope.

None of the above for me too, sorry...call me old fashioned, but I'll take a nice Remington 700 and use the change for optics and ammo.

300 yards and under, i'm getting a rem 700.

i think those rifles, while extremely nice, are a bit extreme for such close shooting.

If you insist on a bolt action, and want performance to only 300 yards, a Wichester Model 70 Featherweight could not be improved upon.

How about a Blaser LRS2?

If somebody forced me to take one, I'd take the Steyer but at this point in my life, there is little I can't do with my M1A and my Garand.

Thanks guys.

I considered the Rem 700 but as I read on most boards they have to be "accurized" and the quality is not always the same. That's what I don't want to do - spend extra time and money on the rifle to make it perfect.

Of course I will shoot the rifle over 300 meters, but most matches here are 100-300m 3x10 standing/kneeling/prone.

I think I will stick to the Steyr.

My choice would be a Winchester M70 with a Nikon scope.

I am no expert but i've been steered away from the SSGs, not because of accuracy, because the barrel is pressed into the receiver using some sort of heat treatment. Unless you have really deep pockets, it would be absurdly difficult to replace the barrel if and when it loses its magic. Out of the three I'd got for the AI.

Posts some pics of your new rifle when you get it!

Shot a slightly used SSG today (with the 6x Kahles and Harris bipod) in the freezing and windy cold. With watering eyes and nose I managed to shoot 1.5 MOA with cheap FMJ (so cheap that one case stuck hard in the chamber  ) at 130 yards. This is certainly far from the 0.5 MOA stated by most resources, but I am relatively newbie to big bore rifles.

I also shot the rifle offhand at the same distance, the best group was around 4 inch...

The 1.5 MOA results was probably more because of ammo and frozen digits than the rifle. When I shot my 700P for the first time I was using crappy FMJ plus it was freezing. My results were about 1-1.5 MOA.
