I like these guys for polymer mags

I think aimsurplus.com still sells steel mags pretty cheap.

I just got some of these from InterOrdnance. They are brand new in the wrap.

If you can deal with 20 rounders, Tapco has them for $5 each. Can't do much better than that.

Centerfire Systems (http://www.centerfiresystems.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CSI&Product_Code=PKG02)

Has 4 mags & a pouch for $29.97

Not bad, but it was $24.97 when I bought 2 pouches a few months ago.

Still not a bad deal though.

I bought 10 of the Interordnance mags and just received them today. My impressions:

Mags are In-Wrap (note I did NOT say "NEW-In-Wrap") and soaked in cosmoline. I used a car parts cleaner tub and mineral spirits to clean it off, not as good as gasoline, but ok.

Mags show DEFINITE signs of storage rash. Some have been inserted into a gun. Storage rash, in this case, is scratches and on some mags, there were one or two tiny rust spots on the mag body, and on a few others there was minor rust on the follower or mag spring.

One had an out-of-spec mag body. It's swollen around the mag lips, so the follower cannot go all the way to the top. I tried filing the follower down with a bastard file, but it still won't work. So out of 10 mags, I have nine that are serviceable.

Definitely not new production, but for 8 bucks a pop, what the heck.

I picked up new Bulgarian steel 30s from fourfourmag.com for $10/mag. They are absolutely beautiful! You have to order 5 or more to get the $10 price.

Mine were in plastic bags with a piece of that no rust vapor paper. They were also well oiled, but not cosmoline. The oil wiped off easily with a paper towel. These mags have never been in a gun and show no signs of being banged around(except for one) and are not at all scratched. One of the ten has a small dent in it, but thats it and nothing that would even come close to being a problem, and even that mag isnt scratched. I guess its just the luck of the draw as to what you get when they grab them out of the crates. I got a bunch of what look to be the same mags from Classic Arms a couple of years back, 10/$75. They were supposed to be Bulgarian, but look exactly like these and in the same, as-new shape.

Matt,

I don't see those steel Bulgarian mags on fourfourmag.com. Care to point me in the right direction?

The mags I ordered from Interordinance, in their Mag Pouch combo, all had rust issues, some deeply pitted. I had to scrub for my life with an SOS pad and Dawn with hot water, then baked them at about 300.

I might order from them again, but that combo wasnt worth the $50 it cost me (with shipping).

Citadel99,
At the time I made my earlier post, they had them listed on their site. They have since apparently removed them. Bummer! I was originally going to order the Chinese 30s from RPB, but they were completely sold out (with no source for more). It's definitely getting harder to find good steel 30rd 7.62 mags.

I would get a few 30 rounders to get by with, then bide your time. There are something like 50 million AKs in the world. More good mags will become available if you can afford to be patient. You might also want to watch the for sale forum on www.ak-47.net . Sometimes you see guys there getting rid of them for whatever reason. Fine with me as long as the price is right. :D
