NEW YORK The National Rifle Association is expected to make ad buys in more than 1,000 papers this campaign season, with an estimated expenditure of roughly $1 million.

"When you look at the polls out there that say that undecided voters are newspaper readers, we thought it would be an effective means to get our message out," said Andrew Arulanandam, director of public affairs at the NRA. "You go hunting where the ducks are."

Arulanandam would not reveal any specifics of the buy, but he confirmed that the concentration would be in battleground states though not limited to those areas. Ads will focus on presidential, state and local races, depending on location and the platforms involved.

At this point, the NRA has not endorsed a candidate for president. Arulanandam did say that the ads will highlight John Kerry's voting record for the past 20 years, which says is against "law-abiding gun owners and hunters."

The NRA is known to advertise heavily around the voting season. In the 2000 election, the organization spent about $20 million in advertising and marketing, and it expects to spend about the same this year.

For this election, the NRA feels that the newspapers make sense to be on the buy. "Gun owners are big newspaper readers," Arulanandam said, but he also added that his organization is constantly evaluating ways to get its message across.

The NRA has 4 million members and is the second largest lobby in size after the AARP

Good.

I just hope their ads aren't "too strong" for a sheeple fence sitter to swallow.
