It is good that he had the time to draw and shoot the bear before it got to him.
I think a .44 Mag with the right bullet and weight is sufficient. I can only guess that in the above encounter the person used the regular 240gr JHP. I think a 280gr or 300gr soft point or hardcast would be sufficient for brown bears.
But I'm no authority on handgun hunting so I'll leave it to those who have more experience to provide their opinions.

I've been waiting to see if WildAlaska is going to fill us in on any more details. Yup, the guy was fortunate to survive the encounter.

A fortunate man indeed. Thank goodness he was packing and kept his wits about him, that was an extremely close encounter.

I like the tone of the report, very sensible.
That's Alaska for you, they know the value of firearms for personal protection.
He stayed calm and layed down the rounds where they were needed, I would hope that I could do half as well faced with a similar situation.
.44 Magnum is a great round, no question.

Good for him. I wonder if a 44 mag is his standard CCW firearm. I imagine in Alaska it very well might be. I don't think it would work for me in Ohio.

Sure would like to know what he had the .44 stuffed with.

Customers for my .Saeco .41 220gr Keith SWC bullet molds use their .41 for deer, moose and bear winter meat.

A common bear hunting load is a 300gr LFN running at 1,350fps.
Ouch.
