S&W's selling high, Colt's selling low?

Back in the revolver market again after a few years off, I've been noticing just about any used Smith I see going for $300 and up, but the Colts seem to go more reasonably. Is this a trend or have I had a few snorts too many?

I should note that Smith vs. Colt to me is like blondes vs. redheads ( I want to have them all ).

Right now, my dealer has the S&W model 637 for $329.88,
and the model 642 for $339.88. Seems like a pretty good
deal too me?

Where I am at S&Ws always sell for less than comparable Colts.

My take on post-agreement S&W's and integral locks is about like Mike Irwin's, though he's a little more on the forgiving side than I am. That's why I'm looking for used S&W's.

As well as I can tell, Colts command the premium prices.

Ok : super desireable S&W's , like 5 screw postwar magnums, prewar registered magnums, most all prenumber N frames and oddities like model 35,650,53,ect. command very high prices that due to their rarity will go up further. The Colt's now ALL command good prices, from Dick Specials for $400 and MK 3's from $300 and Anacondas, Pythons, Rare variety of Diamond back, and such(discounting the SAA's which are THE investment) starting at $800 in pristine condition. Now the rare old Colt's are REALLY expensive ; compare a Shooting Master with a S&W Outdoorsman for instance. Colt's will always go up because of the legend of the prancing pony, which ain't gonna come back on no new Heritage series.;)

At the Tanner Gun Show in Denver the S&W's were at some of the best prices I have seen for a while.

The Colts were all out of sight! $500 and up for whatever if it was a Colt Revolver of some kind. A lot of them were in the $800 and $900 range.

Don't know how many of them got sold, but the owners sure thought highly of them.

The few Colts you see around here (at least the ones in reasonable condition) tend to demand a premium price and get snapped up pretty quickly. The pre-lock, pre-MIM S&Ws demand a premium price (but not as bad as Colts) and probably go even quicker.

Pre-lock, pre-MIM, ( and mostly with pinned barrels ) is the only stuff I look for, preferably in blue steel and wood grips.

To me it seems the Smith's are going up in price quite a bit. I just dont see "deals" on premium condition Smith's like I used to. I see sales on Smith's but these are usually pretty worn guns.

I just got a nice Colt Detective Special, parkerized finish, and the usual holster wear, but otherwise nearly new on Gunsamerica.com for $225.

Colts always seem to run higher than SW in Colorado's gun shows... still kicking myself for passing up a King Cobra for $350. Stupid stupid.

Sometimes Colts are hard to find... I've gone to several shows and not seen a single Colt snubby, at other shows you'll see a half dozen or so.

Doesn't help that Colt doesn't make them anymore.

I'm real pleased with my Dick Special -- a solid gun, tight and well-timed, for a great price.

My King Cobra was my first gun in 1996 and it has gone up about 20-25% in value according to the local prices. It's not going anywhere, but neither are any of my S&Ws.

There are many, many varieties of S&W and the garden varities can be seen at good prices. Now look for specific models with certain options and the prices can rise dramatically. Also back up in the age department and watch the prices rise. Don't confuse the mass quanitites of LEO trade-ins or imports sold at low prices with most models sold to the civilain market.
Colts on the other hand almost always command premium prices. Colt also have never offered as many models as S&W, but mainly that was because Colt consolidated the different calibers used in a specific frame under just a few names while S&W gave all the revolvers different names.
