If it was romanian it was either a SAR-1 or a WASR-10 i believe. Both are good guns. The w just has no dimples ont he magwell area as it was a single stack gun converted to take standard mags. This isn't a problem, but the mags may wobble a bit. The SAR doesn't have this problem. I'd recommend a SAR1 to anyone. Most of the new production one lack the flaws such as cocked off to the side site block and gastubes etc. Snag it for around $300 and you're golden.

Check my web pages and Linx's website for info on post ban rifles.

On April 6,1998 the import of semi auto rifles that use hi cap mags was banned.
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/assault/treasrelease.htm
The quality control of Romanian rifles after this import ban started going down hill. More and more rifles started showing up with the rear sight block, gas block,and/or front sight block pressed on the barrel that were canted to one side. These parts are not canted enough to effect the functioning of the rifle but it make the sights are hard to adjust. Some rifles you can't adjust the sights enough to make up for them leaning to the side. The only option is to drive the retaining pins out and press the sight off the barrel. Then press it back on straight and re- pin it.
If you do decide to buy a post 1998 Romanian rifle make sure you look the rifle over real well to make sure the parts are pressed onto the barrel straight.
The best made AK rifles are the Bulgarian,Chinese,Maadi(imported before 1996),and the Romanian rifles imported in 1997 before the 1998 import ban. As they all were mfg. to use hi cap mags and the quality control was really good.

Get a Saiga, in either .308, 7.62x39 or .223, the shotguns are sweet also.
Here are my Saigas:
